New nurse here....need some advice

  1. Hi all. I'm new to this forum and to being an RN. I graduated last may and began work in a family practice clinic recently. I love what I do but I get so nervous sometimes that my hands shake. I know this will go away once I get more comfortable but when I get feed back from the drs. on what I can do better, they say "stop shaking so much". How can I get past this. Can I get fired for having shaky hands?

    Any advice is appreciated.

Not unless those shaky hands cause you to do something wrong. Have you noticed a pattern as to when your hands shake? If so, when you see those times coming, stop and take a deep breath. Is it due to nervousness? If yes, making a joke about it and laughing can help...either to yourself or a coworker who can laugh with you.

I don't know if this appy to your case. This is from Dr.Vicotor Frankle's famous book," Man's search for meaning," He consulted a pt who has fear of perspiring. He advised in order to cut this circle fromation. In the event that sweating should recur, to resolve deliberately to show people how much he could sweat. A week later pt returned to report that whenever he met anyone who triggered his anticipatory anxiety, he said to himself, " I only sweated out a quart before, but now I am going to pour at least ten quarts!' The result was that, he was able to free himself permanently of it by replacing his fear with a paradoxical wish. Hope this helps!!:wink2:

relax. deep breath, it's normal to get nervous sometimes but don't let it prevent you from doing your job. think about the old timers, i am sure they were scared and nervous too, when they were newbies. just tell yourself, " i can do this"....i am a good nurse!, i am so proud of myself! hey, you passed nclex-rn, now its time for the real deal. i am a newbie too, i work in critical care unit ( 1 month). goodluck!!! oh, maybe you also need to cut down on your coffee, that is if you drink coffee
