New MSN in Education - No Experience

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I recently earned my MSN in Nursing Education in July '17. I've been a med/surg/hospice RN for 10 yrs. and in various healthcare roles 10yrs prior to nursing. Although I am not passionate about either the Leadership track nor Education, I chose Education thinking I would have more opportunities. So, now I'm starting to actively look for a job as a clinical instructor. Funny thing is that I don't really feel like I even want to do that anymore. I don't have any formal classroom teaching experience. I have 10yrs of acute care/clinical experience and I thought at one point I wanted to pass on my knowledge to nursing students and teach them how to be compassionate bedside nurses. I don't feel as passionate about that anymore. I love being a nurse, I think I will miss providing patient care. Maybe being a Clinical Supervisor would be a nice step up, but no experience there either. I guess my question is...... without teaching experience or manager/supervisory experience, what do I do now with this degree I worked so hard for? I am normally a pretty confidence woman, this self-doubt I have been experiencing is upsetting to me. I need direction. There are so many options, I just don't want to waste time or this degree. Thanks for your help!

Specializes in Nursing Professional Development.

1. Where did you go to school that they didn't give you any classroom teaching experience as part of your MSN in Nursing Education program? Did you just student-teach a clinical rotation?

2. Staff education? The specialty of Nursing Professional Development might be something that would interest you. Many such jobs include time on a clinical unit and being part of the patient care team.

Specializes in Critical care.

Why can't you be a bedside nurse (if that is what you want) and also teach a clinical one day a week? I had plenty of clinical instructors that were still bedside nurses.
