Need some input....please!

Nurses General Nursing

So I graduate with my BSN on May 14th. Back in the fall I did my management rotation for five weeks with the nurse manager in the hospital's ER. We hit it off and she made several references to me potentially applying there.

Fast forward to the beginning of March. I email this NM asking her if she is taking on any new grads for the June internship (we had to rank 1 to 4 our 'interest' areas on our applications) and she says no due to budget issues. She also adds that 'she would love to hire me though.'

Then, on March 17th she emails me and tells me that it turns out that she can take 3 new grads after all and if I am still interested to send my app to the ER educator. I do, and get a call the following Monday (22nd) and schedule an interview for the following day (23rd).

The interview goes really well...it was the NM, the educator, and two Patient Care Managers. Just your basic touchy-feely type interview questions. The educator walks me out, says that 'not very many people applied and I should hear back within a week.'

The 'week' is up tomorrow, and I have an interview scheduled on a tele floor on Wednesday.

So, my question is...do I email the ER people and ask them about where the process is going? Or wait, go ahead and interview on the tele floor? I just don't want to waste the tele NM's time, because I feel really good about the ER thing, but I don't want to completely blow off the tele opportunity. WWYD?

If you have a good relationship with the NM (which it sounds like you do), email her and let her know that you've been asked to interview for another position but put the interview on hold until the week was up, when you thought you'd have an answer about the ER. Don't make it sound like an ultimatum; let her know that this is your back-up interview but that you still really want to work in the ER. Ask her if she'd recommend your going through with the tele interview. Good luck!

If it were me I'd shoot them a nice e-mail tomorrow inquiring about the status of your application, reinforcing that you continue to be interested in the position and look forward to joining their team.

Then, if you're still waiting to hear back go interview with tele. If tele offers you a position let the ER people know you have an offer that you need to respond to, and you would like to know if they have a decision for you.

If ER offers you a position thank the tele manager for his/her time and let them know that you accepted another opportunity.

Good luck, it sounds like you are off to a great start!

I would go to the tele interview, see how that one goes, and AFTER(I stress after that), contact that ER manager and see where you application is at. Have they completed hiring or are you still in the running? If it's done, thank her for the opportunity and hope that you get the tele job.

If not, explain that you have some other interviews, but you are VERY interested in working for her and becoming part of the team. Hopefully, that will lead to a offer on the spot....good luck!

I would not wait that long to contact the ER NM. Do it now. Promt follow-up to any interview is a must in my book.
