Need advice: career pathway

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi guys!

I am at a point where I have about 8 weeks left of my new graduate program, I have rotated through med/surg, rehab, day surgery and theatre and none of these areas interest me, well especially not ward nursing. I do enjoy forming longer relationships with the patients in rehab as opposed to day surgery (in and out quickly). I am looking towards community nursing having previously been and studied paramedics and worked as one, I like the idea of keeping people out of hospital as well as treating them at home-similar to paramedic, but combining those chronic nursing skills. I just went for an interview at a prestigious kids hospital in emergency...however just not feeling the passion that I feel the others there were and heart wasnt really in it. My sister thinks I should do a few more years in general wards to get my skills up, but I am just not sure whether to pursue community.....I absolutely loved going into peoples houses as a paramedic and really enjoyed my community nursing pracs...just being out and about. What would be your advice? Should I do it on the wards and hate every minute of it....or pursue what I would like to do or is it too limiting? Advice please! :D Thanks!

I think in today's environment apply for all the jobs you can and get your foot through the door and gaining experience where-ever you get a job

What Silverdragon said. Is anyone in the community offering you a job? Have that be a goal, concentrate on a job right now.

Congrats!

I am not one that believes in just taking whatever job you're offered. But I understand that some people need a job ASAP. I believe in going for what you feel your passion is. You might end up realizing you hate it. But guess what? You'll never have to wonder what if. In your situation, you have experience with providing care in people's homes, so you already have a pretty good idea of what you're getting yourself into. If you have the option, I would say apply for any community jobs that interest you that you can get your hands on. I've been told home health is the bees knees (better pay, and you make your own hours).

Goodluck, hope this helps!
