My summer school dillema...

Jenn,

So what if it shows that you went to summer school? If by just taking the biology and you get a better grade, it can only be in your best interest. I would see that as someone interested in taking responsibility and improving their grades. Since classes are alittle more intense over the summer due to the shortened period, you will probably be living and breathing biology and you will be sure to bring up your grade to at least a B, if not an A.

I can't believe that any college would look at your high school transcript and see that you went to summer school and say "forget about this one." I'm sure that a couple will say, wow! she didn't do too well during the year BUT she took the initiative to go to summer school, when all of her classmates are partying about, and improved her grade. She cares!!! Plus look at all of this extracurricula activity.

Don't fret it! If you can go to summer school for biology, then do so...

Don't fret. I graduated at the bottom 1/4 of my high school class of nearly 800. It does not sound as if you are NEARLY as bad a student as I was. I made good in college, studying nursing, which interested me and was what I wanted. BIG difference, I was a 4.0 student. I would quit worrying about one grade. Remember: Obstacles are those things we set our sights on when we lose sight of our goals. DO NOT LOSE SIGHT OF YOUR OBJECTIVE and WORK HARD! Iwish you luck.

Thank you so much for replying. My guidance counselor is adamant that it will reflect badly on me, but I think I will go anyway. :)

I would ask the guidance counselor why she is discouraging you. I think it shows a lot of initiative and responsibility to want to improve yourself. Keep up the good work and good luck. Please continue in your efforts to become a nurse - you're so very needed. \Take care...judi

Your guidance "counselor" is being anything BUT helpful. Dont' listen to ANY naysayers in your life. Learn this while you are young. If you let them, they will discourage you from getting out of bed in the morning, much less becoming a nurse or whatever you choose. MY friend, the sky is the limit if your heart is in it! (Just ask NURSE KAREN, that is HER tagline). You can do anything you work to! ANYthing!

Thank you, very much. I don't know why she is discouraging me... See, I go to a really tiny highschool (500 students) in the middle of nowhere. We only have two guidance counselors, one is male and the other is female, so the girls always get placed with the female one while the boys get placed with the male one. She just always insists that she's right, no matter what and she won't let me get a word in edgewise. I was thinking about going to see the male counselor anyway, and if they won't let me, I'll ask them why they're being sexist... but I don't know if I should go for it or not. English is my best subject and she really wants me to go into journalism, so I think that's probably why she's so against it. But, I thought she was there to guide me with what I would like to do, not with what she would like me to do. (?)

Take it from someone who listened to a naysayer almost 18 years ago. I'm JUST NOW going back to where I started, which is "just about to start nursing school for my BSN". I let myself get talked out of it by well-meaning friends, family, and advisors / guidance counselors. I wish I could go back and tell myself to follow my OWN dreams and not let anyone deter me.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with the counselors any more than I was required to (like, if they have to sign off on something in order for me to go to summer school). Remember, this is my 35 year old self talking. I've gotten a lot stronger in my personality over the years, lol. I'd just go on and do what I wanted, and the heck with the counselor who is in dire need of a new profession anyway.

Follow your dreams and don't let anyone stop you. You can do this. The counselor is a moron - summer classes will NOT reflect poorly on you. Go for it.

Thanks. :) It's great to be able to take advice from somebody who has been there. My school requires everybody to have a certain amount of time with the stupid counselors. I can't even get out of it...

I will definitely go for the summer courses. Thank you all. :)

Jenn, it doesn't matter what she wants...it is what you want to do that matters. I'm not sure what school guidance counselors are there for...I graduated in a class of 725, saw my counselor once or twice and she wrote a glowing report...how can she, she didn't even know me?!? Do you have to have her sign off for the class? Will she prevent you from taking the class? If so, I would ask to speak with the principal. Outline it just like you have to us about your experiences volunteering at the nursing home and hospital...I'm sure that you may find some better support from him/her.

Yeah, I just might have to go to the principal. I think I'll just make an appointment slip to see the other counselor first though... see what he says. I don't think they can stop me, and supposedly he's a better counselor.

I don't know if she has to sign for the summer courses or not, but I don't think she has the power to prevent me. If she tries, I will go to the higher powers, lol. I don't know why she thinks she's the queen, but my friends have been in similar situations with her trying to dictate to them what they should and shouldn't want to do.
