Job Hunting? Discouraged? Take Heart!

I know a lot of people are becoming discouraged by the way the "nursing shortage" seems to have dried up. Well take heart and sleep well tonight.

"A recent nationwide survey of nurses shows that many of them plan to leave their jobs, suggesting that the nursing shortage will return, according to a release from AMN Healthcare."

I don't know who AMN Healthcare is, and I'm too tired to find out (I'm still a student). I also know that the future they're talking about here seems remote. On the other hand, there's no sense in worrying anyway:uhoh3:, so take this article for what it's worth, and be well:).

(not that a nursing shortage is a great thing, but at least we'll have jobs)

Thank you SO SO SO much for posting this!! I PRAY that this is true and the shortage comes back. I really, really, really want to FINALLY get my bedside nursing job. I really hope this article/survery is true. :up:

Many people who have been in nursing for a long time have seen cycles before. We totally expect the shortage to come back. Shortage as in a reluctance of nurses to work at bedside due to lousy conditions is what I am expecting soon. There maybe actually be a shortage of nurses demographically in 5 years or so.

There's a difference though between a nursing shortage for EXPERIENCED NURSES and then a nursing shortage for GRADUATE NURSES. Sure, there are nursing jobs out there...if you look on any hospital's website there ARE openings for nurses. The question is...are there openings for GRADUATE NURSES? Probably not, and if there is it's a small amount of spots. So while a nursing shortage may help those looking for a job right now, I'm not sure if this nursing shortage this article speaks of will actually help those without any experience and fresh out of nursing school.

What about those of us that are not so fresh out of school? I am an old-new grad (gradated May 09) and have only been able to find work in an outpatient clinic. I worry I will never get into the hospital because I don't have "acute care" experience.

Ugh. Headache.

I keep hearing "Oh, don't worry honey, nursing is cyclical. It will pick up!". Yah, WHEN????? I doubt it will be anytime soon!

Also, has it EVER been THIS bad???????? (Those nurses who have seen this "cycle", I would love to hear what you think.....

This may also be a tired refrain, but, "It's the economy."

These cycles of boom and bust are continuous. Just like the good times cannot go on forever, the bad times cannot either. The recent swings have been more extreme, but they are going to continue.

Just a little bit out the subject but I hate it when you go to apply for a job and it always says:one year experience. How the hell are we going to get a one year experience when nobody wants to hire a new grad :madface:. I just hope that when I graduate somebody will be willing to hire and teach a new grad :hpygrp:
