In which country are you located? I am a nurse in the US and we typically are not held responsible for housekeeping duties such as dusting, sweeping, mopping, and wiping countertops. Most healthcare facilities in the US have housekeeping staff, also known as environmental services staff, that complete duties such as dusting, emptying trash, disinfecting countertops, sweeping, and mopping floors.

Nurses who provide services in the home must keep the immediate patient area clean and tidy. They clean up after the patient and themselves. If they spill something, they wipe it up. They are responsible for cleaning and maintaining any medical equipment. They might fold and put away the patient's personal laundry. They keep track of, and put away the patient's medical supplies. They may, or may not, do dusting and sweeping, if time allows, but usually routine housekeeping of the room in general is the responsibility of the patient's family.

In the OR, we are responsible for damp dusting the instrument tables and lights when we come in first thing in the morning- no housekeeping/environmental staff are there at that time, and it's an infection control issue as well as an AORN recommended practice.

In my facility CNAs are responsible for dusting, sweeping, etc on swing and graveyard shifts as we only have housekeeping during the day. It is of course lower on our list of priorities to get to than resident care but if there is time why not do it?
