I curse the Internet!

Allow me to vent!

It seems ever since the Internet was easy access for all, Everyone is know it all about everything! What's the point of having a license when some secret internet somebody can diagnose and cure everything?

I belong to several message boards and another publishing medium. I see this all the time. It drives me insaine. Not to knock people who just have highschool diplomas, but they graduate highschool, read some crap on the internet and then think they know more then you do. I mean, they REALLY think they know more.

I guess I'm just aggrivated right now because I have this sort of "cyber-stalker" that is following me around trying to debate every comment I make on my writing medium.

I tend to have this attitude that we don't know what other people want. Especially when it comes to childbirth and raising children.

These are just such hot botton issues because there are some people who think their way is the only way and everyone else is wrong.

So curse the internet! In the cyber world, my license is moot because there is so much access to all this information that everyone is a doctor, qualified to hand out cures for diseases.. and have the ability to tell people that they should refuse such and such treatment because they know more then "reality" doctors/nurses/professionals do.

Anyone else notice this?

Do not curse the internet. To blame a whole medium for a few bad apples is foolish.

Just like anything in life, you have to be wary of what you read. Being internet savvy makes it a pleasureable, useful and safe medium that personally, I could never do without.

This problem is why we are so strict at allnurses.com about the exchange of medical advice. It's dangerous to take it from the wrong source and apply it in certain situations. You won't find that HERE anyhow.

Take care, take caution and have fun.

After reading this.. I actually couldn't figure out if I curse the Internet or if I curse commercials!

Every time I see one of those drug company commericals I want to cringe.. And it never fails.. I see a commerical, and then all of a sudden, that's the new "exciting" medication that I am passing out...

I basically work geriatrics.. It's amazing how many people have restless leg syndrome (requip) or are total dependents and are prescribed detrol la (usually among the 20 other meds they are on)

When I was pregnant with my son, I developed a "condition" that I had never heard of in my life. I looked it up on the Internet and found a support group. The prognosis that my doctor gave me was not good, and not very comforting. It actually caused me a great deal of stress.. When I found women who have been there done that, and realized I still had a chance, much of the stress went away. He's 18 months now!

Ha! Speaking of commercials..my dh said last p.m. "Maybe I have restless leg syndrome?" I said, "I think you've watched too many commercials." We both had a good laugh.

On the other hand, my dd had this funny looking reoccurring spotty rash. I was googling rashes and did find a picture that looked exactly like hers. Turns out she has Guttate Psoriasis. I went into the doctors appt saying, "I think she has ____." "What do you think?" Not that the doc wouldn't have figured it out but I think it helped to expedite the diagnosis.

LOL...we call those 'medical professionals via internet' desk chair doctors!

I have had pts come up with all sorts of things and questioned me about miss dx and what not because "well my aunt saw on the internet about..."

I usually say with humor, "well then why did I go to years of school to learn this...dang it...I must have wasted my time!" Then typically I can always find a complication they didn't think of...and just lightly say it for them to think about!
