Help!!!

I am new to this whole thing, but i am looking into being a RN, after a long hard thought i chose it over Radiology. I hope i made the right choice. I am from Ohio and i was wondering if anyone knew the diff in pay for a RN in a hospital opposed to a Dr. Office. What would be the pros and cons of them both as well. I am really in need of some advice. thanks:no:

Not from Ohio, but where I am from most nurses in Dr. offices tend to be LPN's which usually have a lower rate of pay (say 15/hr vs 25/hr). I once applied for a position in a Dr. office and they offered me 19/hr which was a big pay cut.

That being said, if you can afford it, a Dr. office can have some nice advantages over a hospital. They tend to be M-F 8-5 with a regular lunch break. People on the whole are not trememdously sick (or if they are it's 911). You always have a doctor or more available for help.

In the hospital you tend to have to operate more on your own (Dr's visit once a day or so). People are usually much sicker and require more critical thinking to help manage them for long periods. However, you are almost always working every other weekend. New nurses often start on nights (I love it, but realize not everyone does). However, 12 hr shifts are also available in places so you could work 3 days a week and still get by.

When you get into nursing school you will be exposed to a wide range of nursing possibilities - not just hospital vs Dr. office. Find what you really enjoy (old people, kids, babies, really sick people, surgery, etc) and find something that allows you to do that.

I don't think you would get a job in a doctors office, they hire Medical Assistants for $10 an hour. Possibly one LPN, but doubtful an RN.

You could get a job in Public Health which would be comparable to working in a doctors office. The pay is not as good as in the hospital but the hours and benefits are much better. Good Luck.
