Graduating May 2009, Need some advice

Nurses General Nursing

Hello All!

This is my first post, though I have been reading the forums since I started nursing school in Sept. '07.

Here is my concern: I am due to graduate May 2009 from an RN program. I am from GA, but I'm attending school in CT for family reasons. I am going to relocate back to GA immediately after graduation, but these posts have me nervous as to whether I will be able to find a job fast enough. There seems to be new grads actually educated IN GA having trouble finding nursing jobs. I am planning on going back down to GA during our spring break in March, HOPEFULLY having some interviews set up for that time.

I have thought of a last resort/plan B, which is to stay here in CT and work for a year after graduation because I don't see the CT new grads having nearly that much trouble finding work. One of the hospitals that I've done 3 clinical rotations at basically offered me a position. I DO NOT WANT TO STAY HERE, but my family can't afford to have me not working for much longer after I graduate...we've sacrificed enough.

I am pretty open at this point to any specialty, just as long as I get a job.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Economic conditions are expected to get worse. If you can secure a position in CT, stay for a year and then hook up with a travel nurse company and have them bring you back to GA that way you have a gauranteed job. Hope things work out for you.

If it were me, I personally would not stay in a place that I don't want to stay in. That being said I would look for positions in GA now, begin meeting managers now, get connections. I have seen positions being made for a new nurse just because her aunt was friends with the manager of that floor and also be persistent. Bother the nurse recruiters so much that they will get you a job just to get you out of their hair.

It worked for alot of my fellow students. One got a job at a hospital that was saying no way where they hiring. Good Luck!

Apply for both and see what you get offered. However, if you wait until spring break to set up interviews, I'm betting most positions will be gone. NOW is the time you should be sending in applications and trying to get interviews. Chicookie is right- use every single connection you can. Apply for jobs and follow up with your applications. If you can make it back to GA to attend a nursing job fair that would probably help you out a lot.

Good luck!

I am in the process of sending in applications now, I didn't think that I would have an interview any sooner than March. I've been told that it takes some of the recruiters 4-6 weeks to even get back with you. I'll look into the job fairs coming up. I didn't think about that. Thanks!

You can also try some hospitals like Northside in Atlanta that offer internships for new grads. You get paid a regular rn salary but youre considered an "intern" for a year. They do that because in that year you gain experience and you get to pick the area you prefer. But, their catch is you have to sign a 2 two year commitment contract with them for when your internship ends. Go to their website www.northside.com They are an AWESOME hospital. I had my baby their and their nurses were outstanding and the hospital was so clean and nice. That is definately where i plan to go when im finished!
