7 year old thinking his CNA mom is a nurse is one thing.

But why are so many people ok with adults lying about what they do for a living?

Like a nurse does not equate to being a nurse. People should not lie to their children, because it teaches children that its ok to lie.

I didn't say that it is equal, I said maybe she was trying to explain to her child what she does and was telling him she helps take care of patients, like nurses do.

I'm not okay with adults lying about what they do for a living, I don't see the point in it but I do think its silly to get bent out of shape over a 7 year old thinking his CNA/NA Mom is a nurse.

I should have been clearer. My sister in law told my nephew she was a nurse, not like a nurse. When I asked her about it she said, "well I told him I'm a nurse because RN and NA, same thing". I didn't confront her in a rude or aggressive manner it was a joke amongst us but on the inside I was annoyed.

Is it really that big of a deal that a 7 year old thought his Mom was a nurse when she's a nurse assistant? Seriously? Maybe his Mom explained that she was like a nurse? That she helps the nurses? Geeze, give the kid a break. Most kids just associate working at a hospital as being a doctor or nurse. A lot of people mistake the CNA/NA for the nurse anyway. They think everyone that comes into the room is a nurse if they aren't the doctor. And yes, I understand the educational differences but a CNA/NA and a nurse often do similar things (yes, I know RNs do more and more important things) but its not like she's a secretary or a housekeeper and called herself a nurse.

No, they don't.

And I guess my question would be- why is it so bad to explain to a 7 y/o what a CNA does? It's a huge part of the healthcare system, and good CNAs are worth their weight in gold. :) IMO- better to let the kid know the real story- he's old enough to get it, and can be proud of mom's real job :up:

Much bigger issue than the occasional individual fudging on their title in their private life is when employers in health care do it deliberately to fool patients into thinking they are talking to a nurse when in actuality they may be talking to a CNA, MA or secretary. A certain large health care chain in California was making a practice some years back of having essentially untrained people introduce themselves as a nurse when answering phones. So the California Nurses Association pushed a law through the legislature making it illegal for anyone not licensed to use the title of "nurse". Still happens in doctors offices though, where patients and doctors alike tend to refer to any female in a uniform as the "nurse".

I think anybody posing as something they are not is BS!. It has nothing to do with thinking too much of what you do, or feeling that you're better than someone else, it's about principle. If you ever get into trouble, do you want a paralegal or do you want a lawyer?? A CNA maybe be the best darn CNA ever, but he/she is NOT a nurse for the same reasons a nurse is NOT a doctor. The level of training and the scope of practice is completely different. There's a reason the boards made them separate licenses, because they are NOT the same. Its sad that there are real nurses who don't see anything wrong with somebody else playing pretend

Dude. He's seven.

What is WRONG with you? Let him think his mom is awesome. Who's next, Santa?

Indeed.

Congrats on disillusioning a 7 year old and embarrassing your sister in law. I see lots of uncomfortable family gatherings in your future.

I was watching the David Letterman show and actress Minka Kelly stated that she was a scrub nurse. I'm like yeah, go girl. Then I look it up on the Internet then combine her statement that a scrub nurse told her it takes one year to be certified and I come to the conclusion that she was actually a scrub tech!!!!***. Awhile back my 7 year old nephew tells me his mom is a nurse like me!!! I said, "no sugar, she's a nursing assistant". My brother was convinced that his wife was an RN. So when his wife came home I asked her. With my line of questioning she had to admit she was lying and was actually a nursing assistant. Come on man, why lie? I worked hard for my degree so I hate when people go around and lie on my profession. You're an aide, what's wrong with that? I used to be an aide. I was unsatisfied so I continued my education and became an official nurse. If you're unhappy, do the same.

LOL :lol2::eek::lol2:

The husband didn't know either. Sounds like going to bed might be chillier than any random holiday...?

I know some would not be happy with this, but nurses should return to white. It really does look so professional. I wouldn't mind wearing my cap again!

Im a guy and I am pretty sure I would look silly wearing a white cap, especially since I shave me head.:lol2:
