Do You Feel You Have Helped People

I would like some feedback about something....At the end of the day, do you really feel you have helped people? Or do you feel that because of all the paperwork and extras no one else sees your helping people gets lost in the shuffle?

I say this because when I taught public school, there were many days I did not feel like I had taught. I often felt just like a paper work machine and disciplinarian. I have the desire to help people, and I have thought about social work, but nursing is more secure than social work (social service cuts in my area) and I read on the web page that some nurses can be social workers too.

I want to help people in my work. So is nursing the answer?

No matter what, unless it's factory work or something along those lines, emplyment today is filled with paperwork and redundancy.

But to answer your question... YES.

Because at some point in your day, you will have done some little thing... be it ever so humble... that meant EVERYTHING to SOMEBODY.

If you've brought a smile to just ONE patient that day, or wiped away ONE tear... you have helped somebody.

a resounding YES...i find nursing personally very fullfilling and as jnette said, sometimes it's the smallest things that make the world of difference.

just make certain you weigh the pros against the cons if you are considering the nursing profession.
