Child care for 12 hour nursing

I have an au pair. I provide room and board, food, and a weekly stipend and she helps me with child care and house cleaning... she works 40 hours a week for me on the schedule I require and the rest of her time is her own.

I have seen baby sitters for night shift workers. Drop Em off at 6 ish and pick Em up next morning for about 50 bucks.

Finding child care for 12 shifts (at least where I live) is insane, especially if you have only one child who is also school age.

My my husband has a job that can take him to a different state with a simple phone call. There are only three day care centers that service my daughter's school. Two close at 6pm, the other at 7:30pm. $5 per minute if late for pickup. My work is 30 minutes away and 7:30 is the end of the shift and good luck with getting out at 7:30. If I didn't have my parents for back up, I could not work a 12 shift and that's all that hospitals have now. My parents can get my child by 7pm so there is only one option for aftercare. $75 per week, even if I don't use them that week. To hire someone to pick her up as a nanny would cost at a minimum $12/hr (there goes at least half my hourly after taxes). Most people want at least so many hours a week and a specific schedule. Also, finding someone who you can trust with your child and who isn't going to call out while you are already at work is another issue (nothing like getting a call from your child's school telling you the nanny didn't show when you've got a full assignment and haven't even begun charting).

I would think that this day in time there would be more options for child care since so many families don't have 9-5 jobs. However, traditional day care/ after care centers around me haven't caught up with the needs of their clientele.
