Cardiac or Neuro ICU

Nurses General Nursing

Hi!

I'm debating which unit to work for and wondered if anyone can provide some inout for both units. I feel that both are very fascinating but the cardiac icu provides more opportunities for me if I wished to ever continue onto something else.

Sounds like you made your choice. Neuro patients can be frustrating and it is slow progress (if any).

However, there are other variables to consider such as the unit environment, staffing, and support.

Very true.

The one thing that kind of pulls me towards to Neuro icu (not only because it's really interesting) is that the manager seems really nice and I have more of a chance to switch over to days.

Gah! I'm really conflicted lol

I have known people to successfully move on to CRNA school from Neuro ICU. I worked neuro ICU and liked it for 6 years, but the unit was busy. More taking patients off the floor for testing such as CT and MRI (sometimes CT multiple times a shift for one patient). Neuro ICU patients can be very slow progress. But if you wanted NP or CRNA school you can definitely do so after working in neuro ICU.

I hate the brain and love the heart so it is an easy pick for me. What are you passionate for? Give me a good sick cardiac case over a stroke/tbi/bleed any day of the week
