Can my mother be a nurse w/ a 20yr old felony?

Nurses General Nursing

She has been considering a job change, so I suggested nursing as is the field I am going into. But she is afraid that her 20yr old felony conviction will keep her from getting her license. Does anyone have any info on this subject? Or anything that she would need to do? Thanks!

Whenever there's a question like this, your best advice is to contact the board of nursing in the state you live in. They will be able to guide your mother better than anybody here. In Texas, it's case by case and requires extensive paperwork, but it's not impossible.

It depends on what the felony was for. But I think most states do it on a case by case basis.

I just graduated from a top notch nursing school and lets just say that I know for a fact that you can be a nurse with a felony conviction. Most of my fellow students had ... well... lets just say a HISTORY. Most places have a whole division dedicated to that cause (reviewing the history convivted felons to see if they qualify... so it is not at all uncommon). They tend to be a little more cautious violent crimes. But given the amount of time that Has past, I would tell your mom to go 4 it.

As other posters have said, the best thing to do is to contact your local state board of nursing. Unfortunately it is not within the scope of this program to answer legal questions such as these.
