California BON and Excelsior College

Nurses General Nursing

Hi all. I am a graduate of Excelsior College and completed the program thinking that I could reciprocity in after gaining a license in another state. I have now been told that California won't even consider ANYONE from Excelsior for reciprocity...not even very experienced nurses. They (California) were accepting Excelsior grads for reciprocity when I started the program and, though it was a risk, I was willing to take it. I could not attend a traditional program and had no other choices with regard to schools. I am stuck looking for work at the VA or Federal facilities, which is not easy due to budget cuts. So frustrating!! Has anyone had a similar experience? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance :)

I think there is another state that doesn't accept it either, but for the life of me I can't remember which. I think we will see more of this sadly. I started the program, but decided it wasn't worth investing even more money into once I learned states were accepting it anymore. Good luck to you.

Illinois doesn't accept Excelsior grads for initial licensure. Two years of practice is required before applying for endorsement.

For anyone thinking of Excelsior, you need to look up your target state's education requirements before entering a program. OP, I'm sorry that the school met the requirements when you started but didn't when you finished. It sounds like you'll have to move. See if you can apply for initial licensure in another state that you wouldn't mind moving to, if that's an option.
