Consider an MSN instead of MBA.

I agree with the PP - for nurses, MSN is a much better choice if your goal is career advancement in Healthcare. Nursing management jobs are increasingly requiring MSN credentials.

I struggled with this question too. I'm in school now for my MSN/MBA. My advisor told me I could do the same thing with a BSN/MBA that I woulddo withMSN/MBA andit would take half the time (and half the cost). He explained his sister was doing IT implementation in the hospital with a BSN/MBA and had no trouble finding work. However for me I wanted to leave the door open for executive management in hospitals which requires the MSN and I wanted to have the option to teach which also usually requires the MSN.

Ultimately it's all about options to me. I have theclinical background but I want choices for career advancement and I felt like the MSN/MBA offered me the most flexibility. In addition to other options already mentioned you could Own your own business offering a product or service, start a travel nurse company, work in many different types of med supplycompanies or work your way up the corporate ladder in the hospital.

A fine career consisting of making life miserable for people actually doing the work? Until you are downsized, of course.

I purposefully avoided the MBA track in my previous profession because I saw what those guys did and wanted no part of it. I got a taste of management and would much rather work for a living.

(To all you fantastic and hard working managers out there who tirelessly advocate for the nurses and patients at your facility, I apologize; I am most certainly not talking about you! You're the greatest, mwah! Love you to death.)

Just those "other" ones, of course who are too busy screwing up innocent people's lives to ever log into allnurses!
