Backround Check Before Nursing School

I think that criminal checks should be part of the application process for nursing school. I have read some of the threads on this, and feel bad for the people who have spent their time and money completing school, only to find out that the cant work as a nurse. I do believe that some may intentionally try to hide their past, but some simply do not remember things that happened years ago. Many may feel that a shoplifting conviction, or traffic violations that happened many years ago is not relevant, or that a statue of limitation may apply to minor conviction that occured maybe 10-15 years ago or so. The application for licensure may be specific in asking about convictions, and past criminal activity, but time and money (for the prospective student) would be saved, and maybe additional seats would open if background checks were performed before applying for nursing school. Just my humble opinion.

All of the clinical sites we go to require criminal background and child abuse clearances. These are done twice - each August - because they must be current (within the last year). We students are responsible for mailing in the forms with the required fee ($10.00 for each x 4) and forwarding the clearances to the school.
