Any nursing heroes out there?

I enjoy watching Animal Planet. I like seeing how these people dedicate their lives to saving animals. I was watching the show and felt a little sad that there are no real-life shows about nursing heroes.

There must be literally thousands and thousands of situations where the critical thinking skills of the nurses made an impact and should place them in the "hero" category. Okay, maybe "hero" is a stretch...

I wish they had a regular show like Boston Med dedicated to profiling nurses and what we do day in and day out. Our jobs aren't always boring. I am surprised that some creative nurse hasn't been able to convince someone that it really could be interesting real-life entertainment.

Sigh.

You are so right-I do feel like a hero everytime I can get a little old demented, agitated, tearful resident to calm down, accepts their meds and a snack and maybe even smile or share a laugh.

I am pretty amazed that reality TV hasn't come up with a show on nursing. On one of the other boards I frequent we were having the same discussion about the lack of alpaca breeders in reality TV (I have alpacas also) and after a bit of thought, came up with a list of about 35 incredibly obscure occupations that have made it onto TV. I guess some nurse out there needs to wear leathers and have spikey hair (like Billy the Exterminator) or have tons of tattoos (like the guys on American Chopper) or an interesting family (like on Cake Boss) or have a catchy phrase like my favorite Steve Irwin did. Crikey!

I like the way you think. Perhaps it's only a matter of time. Of course HIPPA has to be considered, and facilities might be a bit skittish feering a lawsuit. Guess that's why I use the name "dthfytr" as a general job description. Law enforcement are crime fighters, and every community has fire fighters, so as nurses we're death fighters! Keep thinking, maybe you'll come up with the perfect format for a hit show about nursing.

I just got one of my nursing magazines in the mail and there is a section about this topic. They were talking about launching nursing radio stations. It's a start. :D

We have medical shows here in Aust at RPA and they focus on the different situations, ie: ED/ER, OPD consults, etc. They show what every staff member gets involved in and interview them with the patient there (so they must get consent from the pt first). They are very interesting but don't really show the blood etc as it would be too upsetting, so you do not always get an accurate picture. They DO show graphic theatre scenes after putting a warning on the TV.

I wish they had a pure nursing show as well. Write to Hollywood or CBS and suggest it. Maybe we can leave floor nursing and become actors!!

I doubt HIPAA would be a problem - all they have to do is get permission from each patient. They have so many "real life" hospital shows (love the snake bite ER one!) that I'm am sure they have that problem well taken care of. As an aside, tonight on Dateline (I think) they had a young man who was abused as a boy go through an intenstive week "group therapy session". Really interesting stuff, and they mentione that they got permission from all the other patients there going through the same thing before they filmed.
