? Mass General Hospital?

  1. Does anyone work / has anyone worked @ Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston? I'm thinking of moving to the area and was interested in how this institution treats it's nurses. Any information would be helpful. Thank you. BTW I have 1 years experience in surgical cardio-thoracic step down, and am interested in the same or CCU.

I recently interviewed for a position there. I was told by staff that it is still very much a "doctors" hospital, very old school. I think it is also one of the lowest paying hospitals in the city. When I questioned the salaray, an HR rep told me they don't have to pay high salaries because "it is a privilege to work at Mass General". I said thanks, but I think I'll pass.

I have always been impressed with Beth Israel Hospital. I attended a weekend workshop a few years back on nurse retention and recruitment that Beth Israel sponsored and it was one of the best that I have been to over the years.

Another thing to consider about mass general is that they are located a little out of the city. In as such, nurses from surrounding towns can make the drive easier to them than going all the way into Boston, so they dont have as much of a problem getting nurses, as downtown Boston would.

One of the RNs I work with recently got hired at Mass general she loves it. My understanding is they have plenty of night staff they need day people...............(sounds odd but parking is awful in Boston, so nurses who come from outlying towns or NH would rather go in at night when you actually can get parking.)

Mass General is IN the city of Boston. There is No way around the commute. They told me back in the 70's when they were the lowest paying Boston hospital that "after all, it's a privilege to work at the General. You can work anyhwere in the world with our name on your resume." Beth Isreal and Beth Isreal Deaconess are having big time financial problems and layoffs. Friends who work at "The General" and Brigham seem happy with their jobs.
