Gen, Org, Bio Chem Difficulty

Published

Hi, so I'm just wondering what classes of mine will be challenging and which should be easy. What I honestly have no clue about is Chemistry 121 (Fundamentals of Gen, Org, and Bio Chemistry). I have had pretty much no knowledge on this topic until about 2 weeks ago when I started studying it to get ready. What have your experiences been like? If you could rate this class difficulty wise, without prior knowledge what would you rate it? Thanks in advance.

It depends, please tell us you at least your highschool equivalency in Chemistry.

Specializes in Emergency Department, Pediatrics, Home Health.

I took it for my pre-req's and had never taken chem 121 before. I think it depends on you and what you are good at. I personally did not like chemistry what so ever and it was tough for me. I thought microbiology was going to be the toughest class, it wasn't. Micro was the easiest and most fun class out of all of the pre-req's for me. But, one of my classmates found it to be the opposite for her. So, yeah...it totally depends.

I highly recommend youtube for lessons you do not fully understand in that class.

I only took General chemistry for pre nursing, I absolutely loved it but I had an amazing professor who encourage us and was very informative. If you have a good foundation, everything is attainable once you put the work in.My boyfriend is a pharm d student and he feels the same way. It wont be easy but its not rocket science either, just my two cents.

I took fundamentals and orgo, not bio.

In my experience, Organic was way easier. It still required a lot more studying, but the content was easier to grasp. Naming, properties, reactions, shapes. Simple. I got an A.

In fundamentals, there was so much math, mols, electo-negativity and flipping back to the periodic table. I barely managed to score a B.

For some people, its the other way around.

For my prereqs, we were only required to do a basic chemistry course for nursing that covered organic and many other aspects of chemistry. I was told it won't even really count if I were to perhaps change my major and need an actual chemistry course for whatever I changed too. Wasn't worried about that since the chances of me to change majors is slim to none.

That being said Chemistry was definitely not my strong point ever in my life. I actually almost failed it in high school, but that was literally because I wasn't paying attention at the time in class

But I am 32 now, and when I took this chemistry course last year I felt lost at first, but had a great teacher who had a way of explaining things that helped me to understand. It's not as bad as I thought it would be as long as you are committed to the class you should do fine. Also, as you probably know most schools have free tutoring services should you find that you are struggling. If I can do it, I'm sure you can! I passed with an A!
