GA Hospital Based Nursing Programs!?

U.S.A. Georgia

Published

i moved from va to ga (gwinette county) about a year and a half a go. i am interested in getting an adn/rn degree or diploma in a hospital based nursing program. i tried searching, but it is always a dead end. if i can not get into a hospital based program, then the only non tech school i know of is georgia perimeter college. overall, does gpc have a great nursing program? feel free to suggest other schools. thank you so much for your help and good luck to everyone in school!

Have you checked the GA BON website? Many of the BON websites include a page with all the approved nursing programs in the state, and often those are broken down by type of program. If you haven't already checked that, that may be an easy way to get the info.

"If I can not get into a hospital based program, then the only non tech school I know of is Georgia Perimeter College."

I wouldn't automatically disregard the technical colleges, some of them have outstanding ADN programs. The Board of Nursing website has a list of the approved schools and which degree they offer. The website also has a report that gives the NCLEX pass rates for each of the schools for the past few years. I'm not aware of any hospital based diploma programs in the area. Good luck in whatever you choose.

I am not aware of any hospital based programs. However, I checked the links for Georgia Board of Nursing also and found a program that your core classes are online at Darton College in Albany. The Nursing program itself is a "hybrid" of sorts, campus requirements and clinicals. But for your core classes you can fulfill those online with a testing proctor for exams. It may sound easy, but I have found that the time spent online in class is much more than in the classroom in a week. Also remember when in a classroom you learn from others in a discussion, at home it is up to you. There are discussion postings, but there is nothing like hearing a keyword or phrase and it sticking with you. I do like the fact that I can study at any time of the day. The A&P I&II are online also, and intense, your dissections are sent to you and you do have to be specific. I have found that this has worked great for me and even allowed me to take extra classes so that I can be ready for any RN program in the area with all my core complete. I did transfer many credits from past attendance in college, but at least you can start a few classes and evaluate your progress after each semester. Good luck!!!

just wondering what school you decided to go to since posting this message? i am currently seeking the same opportunity as you were and have run into the same dead ends when searching for a hospital based nursing program in ga. any advice (hospital based or otherwise) on schools here in ga would be greatly appreciated. i did visit the ga bon website and have researched the list of schools that are easily accessible to me, but the reviews from actual students haven't been too great. any suggestions??

I have found in my search of nursing schools that most of the "reviews" you find online are not great. Nursing school is hard and many people don't make it through. Those people like to blame someone other than themselves for their failures. I have narrowed down my search based on location and NCLEX pass rates. To me, it matters more if you can pass the exam at the end than if other people felt cozy about the school. If you are in Gwinnett, look into Gwinnett Tech. They just got an ASN program in the past few years that I have heard great things about.

Thanks for your feedback. I am in Douglas County so I am closer to Chattahochee Tech...they also have a ASN program. So I am checking out that option too. Your right though about the reviews online. Most people don't realize the level of discipline it takes to finish a nursing program, so the opinions are somewhat jaded. Good luck in your future goals...please feel free to keep me posted on your journey!

Thank you all for your help. I'm sorry that I am responding now. I am currently enrolled in Gwinnett Technical College. I am in pre-nursing, and so far,I must say that I love it. The professors are wonderful and are very encouraging!
