i'm a united states citizen, 24 years old, and on the verge of making a life altering decision. i'm from southern california with a bs in biology from a state university. i'm certain this subject has already been answered at so many angles, but i'm considering studying abroad in the philippines.

in terms of the 3 major prerequisites (anatomy, physiology, micro), i aced all of them across the board and did fairly well in the other remaining classes. i'm aiming to enter a jc to gain my adn then follow suit and pursue my bsn. i've applied to 3 schools and have yet to obtain word from any of them.

on the flip side, i'm considering studying in the philippines. ideally, i'm considering studying at either university of st. paul, university of makati, or global innovative. the reasoning for this is two fold. one, to obtain a bsn in 2 years rather than 4. second, something which i feel very strongly about for my own personal reasons, i have to be on my own. i've considered studying out of state, but it wouldn't be the same. i've already applied with global and umak, but the probability of me entering either school appears to be high.

i realize i'm fairly young still, but i have my own reasons as to why i need to complete my schooling as soon as possible, mainly family and financial reasons.

1. i've heard that the education in the philippines is not perfect, at times, even shady. are all the schools notorious for this? how would i investigate whether or not the school is legitimate? has anyone here heard of anything good from global or umak?

2. if i were to acquire my bsn in the philippines, i've heard i would not require to take the philippine version of the nclex. i would take it regardless, but is this true? how many other tests or classes would i have to take once i returned home to california? i've also heard i'd have to work within the philippines for 2 years after acquiring my bsn, is this true?

3. would my bsn be recognized by the state of california? how difficult would it be for me to find a position? finally, how would my pay scale relate compared to other nurses with bsn degrees or adn licenses from here?

i apologize if there is so much to answer, but i'm completely and utterly lost. i've lost many hours of sleep and stress just keeps on piling up from pressure from family and my indecision.

answers to these questions or even advice would greatly help, thank you in advance.

well, are you aware that you can do an accelerated program since you already have a bachelor's in something here in the states? usually, it would take you 1-2 years to obtain your accelerated bsn. in my state(nj), it's 15 months for the accelerated bsn and cost about 15-20k.

ofcourse you also have the option of getting your bsn in the philippines. it is so much cheaper. but you will always be considered a "foreign nurse" and have to go through some of the hoops that they go through. and yes you can skip the nle(national local exam) of the philippines and you can just take the nclex-rn. i don't know why would you want to take the local exam anyway. if you are not required, then why take it? unless you are planning on working in the philippines?

i am not quite sure whether the 2-year restriction applies to you since you are a "foreign student". i think it applies only to those who wish to use their bsn degree for immigration purposes.

as long as you pass the nclex-rn, your prospective employer will not treat you differently because you are a "foreign educated nurse". and most hospitals don't pay you extra for having a bsn degree. if you get extra, it usually is just 50 cent to a dollar difference. but you do get the first dib for the "administrative" positions because you have a bsn.

if i were you, i would do the accelerated bsn here in the states because it seems it is the fastest way for you to become an rn and you will not be a "foreign" nurse.

There are some good options in the Philippines such as the following (and I have already visited most of them that I am posting):

Arellano University (I did not visit this college)

www.arellano.edu.ph

Offers International Nursing Program, 3 yrs will be spent at AU and senior year at Alderson-Broaddus College in West Virginia. You will receive a diploma from Alderson-Broaddus College; that is a US BSN degree. Subjects already taken will be credited but still you have to finish the 4 year course.

Tuition fee: Intl. Nursing Program P50,000 – P65,000 and it follows the curriculum of Alderson-Broddus College in the US; however, if you stay there and do not go to the US in the fourth year, then it is a local BSN P16,000 – P18,000.

Campus: 2600 Legarda St., Sampaloc Manila

Contact No.: 735-3684

Philippines Women’s University www.pwu.edu.ph (I did not visit this college)

It has a trimester program, and it lasts for 2 years including 1 summer

Tuition fee: P720 per unit + acceptance fee of 10,000/year and residence fee of 5,000/semester

Campus: 1743 Taft Avenue, Manila / E. de los Santos Avenue, Quezon City / Davao campus

Our Lady of Fatima University (I visited this college and I liked it very, very, much; and it has dorms nearby).

www.fatima.edu.ph

Campus: 120 McArthur Highway, Valenzuela City, Philippines

Contact Nos.: 293–2703 to 06

In The Visayas region:

Cebu Doctor’s University (I visited this college and I like its facilities and clean and sheek look and feel on the inside of the college; and it has a dorm inside the college).

www.cebudoctorsuniversity.edu

Campus: Osmena Blvd., Cebu City

Contact No.: (32) 253-8001

Silliman University (I visited this college and I totally enjoyed staying at the campus and it was really big and beautiful. It is a plane ride from Manila and 4-7 hours away from Cebu city). This place was my favorite places to visit out of all the places thatI've been to because it is the cleanest!

www.su.edu.ph

Campus: Hibbard Ave., Dumaguete City

DO NOT GO TO St. Ignatius Health Science College www.stignatiuscollege.com if you want a BSN or a bachelor's degree in nursing because this only offers an associates degree in nursing and the tuition is too high and makes no sense. So, do not go there.
