Recently a middle aged pt of mine came back from surgery w/ concious sedation. Now usually my pts are groggy, in pain, confused etc. Typical.
This is the first time I had someone come up from the PACU laughing and cracking jokes. She was soooo funny. Talking about how the doctors were so cute and she wanted to get on with the surgeon. At one point she grabbed my hand said that she loved us nurses and we were all angels and she had the best time ever.
Everytime I came in the room she would wink and ask if that hunky doctor was going to come up and see her. I only wish I stayed when he came up just to see the look on his face.
She made my night. I wonder what med they gave her down in OR because I need some of that for the rest of my pts - I would actually look forward to work! :redpinkhe
Have you had pts like this?
this reminds me of the kid who came in after an mva on the way to school and i went down to the er to help since there were three other victims, all very badly injured. i wasn't a bigtime trauma nurse so they told me to go look after him and stay outta the way:d. he had a few bumps and bruises but looked pretty good, not even enough for a bandaid. i started assessing vs and talking to him. he moved all, no blood or fluid in the ears or nose, had equal grips and good pupils, and was alert and friendly, denied pain anywhere, vs fine, but... there was just something "off."
"do you know what day it is?" "tuesday, sir." (i am by far not the world's most beautiful woman but have never been mistaken for a male. also, it was friday:d.)
"do you know where you are?" "sir, norfolk va, sir." (umm, off by many, many hundreds of miles. we were near a base, so i say to myself, "ok, so he's a military brat, which accounts for all the 'sirs,' " and i figure his dad's last posting was probably at the naval base there.)
trauma was awash in blood and jammed with every spare surgeon in the house busy with the other three kids, but i had to tap somebody on the shoulder and tell them they had to get neuro in here stat. kid had a rapidly accelerating sdh.... it was kinda funny, for awhile...
