Fundamentals V/S Med-Surg

Published

I have heard some rumors that makes me very nervous. "The students who do well in Fundamentals usually do horrible in Med-Surg" Is this correct? Have you come across this in your program? I am doing great in fundamentals so does this mean I will bomb Med-Surg? I am really getting worried. I am in an ADN program and love nursing. This is my life. I eat, sleep and breath nursing so hearing this really worries me. Any feedback would be appreciated.:redpinkhe

Um...who do you think does well in MS? The people who had to take Fundamentals twice because they failed? I have the highest grade in both of my MS classes (or so my clinical instructor told me yesterday) and I got an A in Fundamentls - I'm in an accelerated program, so we take MS 1 and MS 2 concurrently. Whoever told you that probably MEANT that not everyone who does well in Fundamentals also does well in MS. If not, it's like the rumor that C students are better at clinical than A students - I'm sure some are, but it's not that you can only be skilled in one area. Or the other one, where ADN programs offer so much more hands on experience than those BSN programs, where all you take is management classes. They're all "half truths."

Not correct: I've pulled As in both.

The truth is that your performance in Med-Surg will depend on what work you put into the M/S class and not on what your Fundamentals grade was. It's as simple as that. If you read the textbook and stay on top of your studying, then you'll do fine. If you think you can cram the night before each test as well as never open the textbook in M/S because you did it that way in Fundamentals and still got a good grade, then you're in for a big shock come Test 1.

i agree with some of the above posts. Ppl thought fundamentals was a breeze, no problem, I can do it. then BAM here comes MSI and pharm. half my class is failing both. only a handful of us are passing. I have the only A.

people just weren't expecting to have to study so much! I looked at it like this: in fundamentals you learned the basics of critical thinking. in MS, it is time to apply it.

and pharm? it's a LOT of info.

all i can say

Wow, is this usually how it's set up in the ADN program: fundamentals first, then med/surg? Next semester I'll be taking the following classes: Med/Surg 1, Pathophysiology 1, Health Assessment 1,

Pharmocology, and Intro to Nursing..

Yikes!

I find Med-Surg to be much harder. That said, it's not impossible, especially if you're willing to put in the extra time and study harder.

My ADN program is four classes specific to nursing, 8.5 credits each: Fundamentals, Med-Surg, Psych/Peds, and OB/Med-Surg
