Fun Shoes (for a Boring Uniform)

Nurses Uniform/Gear

Published

My new hospital requires pretty boring scubs (dull gray, with only three unflattering style choices that must be purchased from one particular off-brand manufacturer). I guess the consistency looks professional, but wearing the exact same scrubs as the 1,000+ other nurses in your facility is a little...uninspired.

Anybody have any comfortable tennis shoe recommendations in bright, fun colors or patterns? Again, the uniform is gray, so it will match just about anything.

I'll paste a link here but just in case it doesn't work,  I wear the Merrell Antora 2 Rainbow trail running shoes for the 12+ hours a shift. The colors are supposed to represent the painted mountains of Peru.  I love them because they go with everything and they're sooooo comfortable!

Those are awesome, thank you for sharing!

I have flexibility where I work in regards to my uniform but on the days where I wear "boring" scrub shirts I always wear bright, colorful shoes! And usually my patient's or their caregivers notice and smile:)

Merrell's are awesome - so comfortable, good support and well made!

Alegrias are option if you ever want to try something other than tennis shoe style - they've got some really fun patterns! In fact my house shoes/ slippers are Alegria clogs with cats on them because they are so comfortable.

@vampiregirl I have heard great things about Alegria's, but I've just had such a bad experience with Dansko's that it's made me wary of them. I think the reason that I disliked Dansko's so much wasn't even the ankle instability (which I know a bunch of people complain about), it was more that they have literally no padding or shock absorption.

Are the Alegria's padded/squishy at all inside? Also, have you found any places where you can try them on, or do you have to order them online?

Thanks!

I also had issues with Danksos - not only the instability concerns but also with comfort/ support.

I learned about Alegrias from a friend who manages a camp kitchen, so is literally on her feet all day and encounters slippery floors. Alegrias are not squishy, they have excellent support. They have some other footbeds available, I'm not sure what options they offer.

They are available at various stores, here is a locator:

I'm a fan of Hokas. I have high arches and also wear custom orthotics. Hokas are very supportive and come in some wild color combinations. It's a little challenging to find them in stores (REI has them) but they are readily available online. I am a size 9 and usually buy the 10 to allow for compression socks, orthotics, and swelling.
