Float Pool Info
When I was in school I worked as an LPN in the float pool. Our facility is pretty strict about what LPNs can do even though the state BON says LPN's can do almost everything a RN can do so with that being said, I never got to float to the ER as a LPN. I did however get to float between the 4 Medsurg floors that had their own subspecialties. Before I accepted the LPN float pool job, I spent the previous 3 1/2 years on a medsurg unit at a different facility (that let us practice to our full license capacity) and would often get moved to the stepdown unit which I absolutely loved. I think it's PREFERRED that float pool applicants have some sort of experience but the facility I currently work at offers float pool positions to new grad nurses which to me would be terrifying as a new nurse. ? Heck even though I had floor experience, I was still scared. LOL! I just passed my boards for RN in December and am starting my fulltime float pool position which opens me up to the entire hospital so I'm feeling the terror again. Hahaha!

Float pool questions
I get notified of my initial assignment via text two hours before the start of the shift. You can indeed get moved mid-shift or anytime really. I've been lucky and only had to that a couple times though. You don't really get time to get your charting done before you get moved but with that being said, get your charting done. LOL! When I can, I TRY to take a 30 minute break from anything nursing but I've never had a full, uninterrupted break before. The difference in pay varies and is hard for me to comment on since I went from an LPN float pool PRN position to an RN float pool full time position so my pay jumped a LOT. Signing in to Epic is the same for everyone in a way but where I work we (float pool) have to pick/sign-in to the floor/specialty we're working in. Like if someone is on a dedicated floor such as 3rd-renal/vascular, that's all that person can choose from. With float pool we have the option to choose from every floor or specialty like ER, PCU, ICU, CCU, 3rd-renal/vascular medsurg, 4th-oncology/pediatrics medsurg, 5th-ortho/neuro medsurg, Behavioral Health/Psych, Rehab, etc. I hope that made sense.

Fun Shoes (for a Boring Uniform)
I'll paste a link here but just in case it doesn't work, I wear the Merrell Antora 2 Rainbow trail running shoes for the 12+ hours a shift. The colors are supposed to represent the painted mountains of Peru. I love them because they go with everything and they're sooooo comfortable! https://www.merrell.com/US/en/antora-2-rainbow/47533W.html?dwvar_47533W_color=J135430

New Grad LVN thinking of quitting. HELP!
I would be trying to find another place to work. I work on a med surg floor and deal directly with covid-19 daily but luckily, we have proper PPE to use.

What size are you in scrubs??
All the tops I buy are XL but I vary in the bottoms with different brands. Like the Infinity by Cherokee I wear a Large bottom but my Wonderwinks are still XL.

Nursing school in my 30s
I'm 32 years old and am fixing to start my schools LPN program. And there are people much older than me that are going through it too. I plan on going on through to eventually get my BSN and that will take a few years considering where I'm starting from. You can do it!
