  1. Should I become a real estate agent part time?

Hello everyone!

My name is Paul, and I am a full time RN in CA. I have 2 years of experience on a telemetry floor, and I currently work 7p-7a. I am next to go to days on my unit, and January is looking promising as two nurses are moving into the ICU. Working nights has been tough, and I cannot wait for the day that I get offered a day-time position. Anyway, to prepare for the future, I will have more time, and I wont always be tired once I move to days. I would like to become a real estate agent. Real estate is something that has always fascinated me, and I would love to earn some extra money working in the field. I have already signed up and started my classes for real estate. I would just like some insight from those who have already ventured down this path. What kind of money can you make doing real estate (and I mean really trying not just half-a$$ing it)? Working 3 days a week as an RN, would I be able to sell homes? How has being an RN and a real estate agent been for you?

Thank you all in advance. All answers correlating to my question are greatly appreciated.

Best,

Paul

I have a hard time, like others have said, with the idea of a part-time real estate agent. It's not so much the part time bit, but the fact that you will not be available to take calls, show homes, complete contracts and addendums, etc. I have bought and sold quite a bit of real estate over the years, and it quite frankly annoys me when my agent makes me wait more than an hour for a call back. Working 3 12s during the week could greatly reduce your ability to be available for your clients.

There are still ways you could use a real estate education. Real estate investing is a fabulous way to make money, for example, and having a good understanding of the laws and contract and such would give you a leg up.

What would you do for a client in a bidding situation, who possibly needs to quickly change the offer, and you're in the middle of a 3-4 day stretch?

I became a real estate agent Full time July 20,2018 and kept per diem status. My brokerage didn’t allow me to do full time RN and part time agent because they will train me and expect me to be full time. I accepted at that time and good thing I did. It was scary but I sold 18 homes from July ‘18 to July ‘19 and most of my clients are nurses. I’m targeting to sell 30 homes this year. I also took advantage of the fact that I’m a nurse and I go by #realtorinscrubs. I now resigned as a nurse because I don’t want to neglect my family time which is the only reason I quit nursing. Follow your passion man. A lot of people told me I’m stupid for quitting nursing but I make twice as much money in RE than I would make as a nurse. It all depends on how you work it. It takes a lot of time, persistence and dedication. But then again, there is an 84% failure rate in Real Estate and you’re not a bad person/salesman if you feel that Real Estate is not for you.

Hi Paul,

I'm also interested in becoming a realtor while working as a nurse. I work in health service coordination which is basically case management. I work 9: 00a to 5: 00p but my hours are flex time. I work from home most of the time but go to our office as needed and other than scheduled meetings can take a phone call/email/meeting for an outside reason about anytime so long as I make up the time I missed taking that call/email/meeting. I'm also in the process of obtaining my nurse practitioners degree through a bridge program for ASN to MSN. I'm just getting to the core courses part of the program and was thinking of taking the Summer off to obtain my realty license. I'm definitely taking the Summer off regardless for a break so might as well put it to good use! Did you end up pursuing realty? How are things going for you in general if you did or didn't? It sounds like an ambitious endeavor and I hope that whatever you chose to do, you were proud of your hard work!

Thank you,

JCShay
