full time to part time

I have been working night shift in my med surg unit for 3 years now. Some nights are extremely crazy. I asked my manager if I can switch to part time because that would help me out greatly. I asked to switch for personal reasons. She said that there is no part time positions offered. However, I know of some RNs that are working part time...one in my unit and another RN in another med surg unit. So why is the manager saying this? The only way that I would get part time position would be if I switched to working as an agency nurse. I looked at the hospital's career section but they rarely update their website, so that info may not be correct.

I don't know what to do. I truly cannot work full time. I applied to other hospitals for part time positions but I never hear back from anywhere. So getting a position elsewhere is very hard.

Any advice on what to do?

    My job is just like that. My manager will not create a part time position for a current employee even if we are drastically short. She'd rather meet her budgets will full time people. We have six job postings open right now for night shift for full time employees and she still refuses to create part time/PRN positions for current employees.

    Our employees who want part time usually just leave and go somewhere else.

    How much PTO do you have? Can you take one shift of PTO per week until you run out/until you are able to find something else?

    It may be the manager's preference. I have worked in positions where the manager would not create part time because staffing would be more difficult. Perhaps the other team members have worked part time for a long time before that manager started ...

    One position I worked at was fulltime only but when I went back to graduate school I asked in writing for a reduction in work time and was allowed to reduce.

    With your experience you can apply to jobs and see what happens. Sometimes it takes a couple of applications to be considered, also make sure your resume sticks out in a good way and write a nice cover letter.
