Full time employees and clinicals at UTA

It sounds like a heavy work schedule to add in watching lectures, studying, and clinicals, but it is not impossible and I completely understand that you can't go without working. I just graduated from UTA but I was in the traditional program. I worked the whole time I was in school but not full time. And there were plenty of people in my class that managed to work full time. Is there any way maybe you could decrease your hours a little? I know a few people that are in the academic partnership but I don't think they are working, but I also know that one of them has had a clinical on the weekend. I would def talk to your job though to see how they will be able to work with your schedule, if possible. Also, I am not sure if the a.p. goes similarly with the in-class group, but you also might want to consider what happens when you get to a semester when you have 2 clinicals a week. Also, something else that might be helpful is to try calling an adviser at the nursing dept to get more info on the program and how the scheduling works.

I have spoken to the advisor and was told that you will be have to be available at any time for clinical rotations.

Has anybody started clinicals in the UTA program? I am a student through the academic partnership program. I work full time Mon-Fri 8-5 at a local hospital and will be applying for Fall 2011 admission. For those that have already started clinicals, what times and days were they? In an ideal world, I would love to have clinicals on the weekends or nights. I really cannot afford to quit my full time job and don't want to end up stopping the program. Thanks so much for any advice or encouragement.

Clinical days depend on which hospital you get partnered with. Parkland is usually Sat-Sun.. some other hospitals are Fri-Sat, Mon-Tues.. it all depends! Also, your psych and peds rotation will be at a different hospital so those days will differ as well. For me.. 1st semester rotations were Fri-Sat. 2nd Semester psych rotation was Tuesdays for a month, then back to Fri-Sat for another month for med-surg. All clinicals are in the DAY. Preferably.. 6am-4pm. It is totally understandable that you need to work. Perhaps change shifts or go part-time? It is doable but these clinical days are set in stone! ALSO.. the program includes proctored tests which means you will need one day out of the week in which you are free. For the past two semesters, I have had to keep my Thursdays open because that's when my proctored tests were and the times varied every week from 1000-1700. The nonproctored tests that you take at home are also only open at a certain time. All of the dates I have mentioned may not be the same for you. This is just from what I know from my previous semesters of being in the program. Prepare to have at least 3 days off from work.

@kazuo: thanks for the info! i am starting in september and this helps me kind of have an idea for planning. which hospital are you partnered with? i am starting my online orientation this week and i'm sure I'll get more answers soon, but i'm just so anxious to get things ready and going! :)

I applied to the program for Spring 2012, Good Shepherd. Did you apply for the program in Longview? So far, I only know of one other person besides myself who has applied. Just wondering how many people applied and if they've heard anything.
