Hello,
I am wondering what other on call position expectations are. I am 7 days on, 7 days off beginning Fridays at 5pm through Monday morning at 8am, then Mon-Thurs overnights 5p-8a. I hoping to get some feedback on what other FT on call positions are like as I've been at it for nearly a year and it is truly a whirlwind. I am doing triage and COC/admissions/deaths and some routine visits as well. There is supposed to be a nurse back up for the visits but due to staffing this typically isn't the case. We are managing a load of about 80 patients. Of course there are the occasional nights with no calls, but other times I am going for the entire weekend without a break around the clock.
-Are any of you doing 7 on 7off for on call- if so is it just triage or visits also?
-How many patients are you on call for?
-Are you making a full RNCM salary? I am salaried but a bit lower than the RNCM's.
Thanks in advance!

I do on call from Friday 5pm to Monday 9am and then Monday through Thursday 5pm to 9 am. I have a triage nurse and a back up nurse at all times. We do admissions, visits, etc on weekends and at night if it is warranted. I am salary and I do make me more than the RNCM. Are census is 72.

I work just Monday through Thursday 5 pm to 8am. I don't do triage except as a rare occurrence. I have another nurse full-time nights with me and 2 nurses that are back up with us. They have caseloads and are rotated out. We have full time weekend crew.
We have over 300 patients in a busy metropolitan area. I do have two admission nurses, but sometimes we have more admits that need done. I have had to call social worker and chaplain to a death visit because there wasn't enough of us to go around....

I just quit a full time hospice case manager job. I had done hospice for 8 years. Our on call did 7 on/7off from Friday 5pm- 8am thurs with 24hrs on the wkend. We had a census of 200!
the CM were backup, we did about 3 Days a month. On call did admissions, deaths, routine visits, GIPs, deliver supplies. They were run ragged! I had one tell me she had driven 200 miles one shift! There were 3 full time RNs on call m-f and they had an LPN with them on Wkends, one of the RNs did triage only and the other 2 did all the visits. During the week typically the saw maybe 3-4 pts a night each but wkends they would each see 7-8 patients a day, It was always busy.
