Frustrations on Lvn to Rn bridge programs in Southern CA community colleges

Published

I just finished LVN school here and was planning on applying to the bridge programs numerous community collegs here have. However, the requirements are different now, they require a transition course, where some only offer it once a year and you need that to apply to the program itself. Some prerequisites are different as well. I'm just worried because some of my prerequisites will expire next year and the application deadlines are near.

I honestly don't want to do online courses or go the private route because I've already taken out large loans.

I'm sure a lot of you are on the same boat. For those of you who have applied to community colleges, how long did you wait to enter the LVN-RN bridge programs? Specifically Saddleback, Goldenwest, Santa Ana, Cypress, and Cerritos.

I just got into a LVN-ADN program here in san diego at the local cc. I waited 3 years!!! i never thought i was going to get in. I just started the bridge class on june 22. So far, it hasent been anything that I was expecting. but, im just glad to be in..

Hi guys,

I will be in the same boat as many of you. I am currently at Concorde and will have my LVN in a year. I plan to do a year of prereq's and then apply to most of the surrounding community colleges for an LVN-RN bridge program.

I have been hearing rumors that some community colleges let LVN's skip waiting lists or minimize the waiting lists for LVN's dramatically (after they have finished their prereq's, of course.) Is this at all true?

P.S. I am in Southern California!

in Riverside Community College they prioritized their LVN grads. So if you're LVN who wants to do their advance placement programs, tendency is you have limited space. They also require you to pass the HESI exam which is not that hard, and take the nursing 17. I applied last Jan. 2010 until now I have not receive any reply from them. I called and visit them almost every week. Some CCs encourage me to apply the regular ADN program.

Ahh thanks lvngirl for the quick reply... at this point in my life, I would move practically anywhere to get into a transferable ADN program.

After I took the 3 lvn-rn transition courses(ez btw), I was accepted the very next semester!

Try Los Angeles Harbor College. Finish ur pre-reqs, teas, and the 3 courses and u should get in rather quickly. This was my experience. My gpa was only 3.0 also. LAHC has an awesome program(check the BRN).

Good luck :D

hey, I heard the same rumor that you did about skipping the waiting list, then a friend talked to the counselor and they said 1 of the 25 LVN apps made it into the program, because it is based on available room in the second semester. But now Moorpark and College of the Canyons are going on the points system-so wait list is gone. and i heard that Ventura is going to that system as well.

I am just going to apply everywhere and hope that i get lucky somewhere!! Good luck!!

Just starting the game...finding out really good and important information from all of you. I just don't know what do to the VCC school LVN then Bridge or go to Tech School and obtain LVN and then try and try to get into the RN Program at VCC.Any suggestions. I am just getting back into the game I have my A.S.Degree but have to retake the core classes since was over 15 yrs ago that I did the core of core classes for nursing, so it feels like I am starting from scratch but have an A.S. Degree.. a little backwards I know. help any suggestions all are welcome for Ventura County

im just curious if anyone has had any success with going to a private school in Southern California such as ACC, Concorde, Summit, or Four-D done your LVN and then done a RN bridge program? Has anyone had any success in finding a school where you dont have to do all your GE's? All the community colleges are so hard to get into so I find it hard to believe that you woul dhave to stop at a LVN and not have a RN bridge i just cant find one. I have seen west Coast but they are so expensive. Anyone? ONly other school I found that does RN is everest but from what I hear they are hard to get into also because of the requirements and they only have classes are only 40 per session thus making it very competative?

any chance you are interested in an online option to obtain your bachelor's degree with a major in nursing? see http://www.indstate.edu/lpn-bs/index.htm Lots of posts about it at https://allnurses.com/distance-learning-nursing/indiana-state-university-365874.html

Best advice would be to contact the JC's I went in to Ventura for a counseling appointment in september and they told me that i start second in Jan. Dont listen to the rumors, call the schools =) I also went with a friend to Santa Barbara City college and LVNs there can start their program in third semester. Moorpark has a test that you take coming in as an LVN to determine if you join in second or third. But the problem my friend is having with Moorpark is that your core prereqs must be within 5 years, so she now has to retake math just to apply.

Good Luck! Call the schools, get a counseling appointment, it doesn't hurt!!

RE: I was looking into some of those colleges too. I finished my lvn in may 2010.initially i was looking into rn programs. cypress seemed to be the best fit for me but you have to take a transition to upper division nursing class. lbcc is pretty quick as long as you have ALL your general ed req's and 3 sciences done. you have to have one year experience to apply at goldenwest.

Now im looking into LVN to BSN programs instead though. Azusa pacific has an LVN to BSN program. don't know much about it yet. I can't do online school either.

the va has great education benefits as well if you can get hired on.

Chris, Ventura CommunityCollege will accept LVNs as advance placement. However, you will be held accountable for all the information that was taught to the previous class as well as understanding how to write their care plans, reports etc. the VCC way Many LVNs found it difficult to make the transition and be successful in a program with other students who started at the beginning.

Ventura CC will take LVNs into their program in the 2nd semester and you must complete three semesters to graduate. Many of the advance placement LVNs stepped back and started in the first semester. This took all the pressure off and enabled the LVN to learn the ins and outs of the program. It may sound like redoing the same info, but actually you are learning at the RN level with the knowledge of an LVN.

To my knowledge, there is no 5 year limit on core classes at VCC.
