Frustrating

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Let me first start by saying that I've worked with a lot of good nurses in the past and the majority of the ones I work with now are very helpful and wonderful people to work with. But the other day, I overheard this conversation from the report room and it really upset me. This was while the night charge was giving report to the head nurse (day charge nurse).

Nurse #1: You know what pisses me off? Aides. I told that CNA (me) to change that pt's diaper 30 mins. ago and he said he would get the nurse tech to help him. I can't believe how lazy these aides are.

Night Charge Nurse: I hear ya. But if you're talking about Jared, it wasn't him. That's not like him. It sounds like the tech disappeared and he couldn't find someone to help him. Jared always does what I ask.

Head Nurse: Well, you know. They're just ****ing aides. What the hell are they good for anyway? I mean, you ask them to do something, and it's not like they have anything to do, and then it doesn't get done.

That was the most awful thing to hear, let me tell you. Aides have just as much to do as nurses at any given moment, we just don't have the knowledge and training to perform the nursing tasks that an RN or LVN does. I mean, as a nurse if you have 5 pt's and each one has 5 orders that need to be carried out before the end of the shift, just keep in mind that I will always have 15-30 pt's, each with just as many things...q2h turn, q4h vitals, mouth care, pericare, ambulation, etc. etc.

I know there are a lot of lazy CNA's out there, but I take pride in my work ethic. I asked the tech to help me clean the patient and she disappeared. I then informed the oncoming shift that the patient needed to be changed. I just can't believe what I heard...

don't you wish you could just have her enter the twilight zone and have it be just the rns and lpns that are there and no aides? she would be begging for the cnas after 5 minutes! :lol2:

i actually worked in a hospital like that very briefly...it sucked!! no aides/techs. just

lpns and rns.

what's unfortunate is that it only takes a couple of lazy aides to change opinion. keep doing what you're doing and if your work ethic is as good as you say it is, you will shine through. i know who the "good" aides are on my floor and who the "bad" ones are. and believe me, i absolutely hate working with a "bad" one because 9 out of 10 times i always have a terrible night. no support from them, they disappear after they get their vitals/fingersticks done, you have to hunt them down constantly because they've disappeared.

the other night i had three call lights go off at the same time, and all three needed help to go to the bathroom. i had to get another rn to assist me. where was the aide? over 30 minutes late returning from lunch break (sleeping in a lounge somewhere i'd guess, since she works 3 jobs and is always exhausted when she comes to work). on the flip side, there are awesome aides that actually care about doing a quality job. fortunately most of the aides i work with are hardworking and i love working with them. i can understand your frustration to feel lumped in, but believe me the nurses on your shift aren't stupid and know which side of the coin you fall on (hence probably why the other nurse was saying, "that doesn't sound like jared").

that nurse sounds like she was venting, and it is disrespectful, but don't let it ruffle your feathers. just because someone is an rn/lpn doesn't mean that they can't be a jerk!

I can't believe someone would say something like that about anyone... especially someone that they work with. I'm sorry you had to hear that. Hopefully, she'll shape up soon. Did her supervisor talk to her at all?? Good luck with it all anyway. Maybe she'll realize what she is saying is not doing anyone any good.

Take care!

I would assume her supervisor talked to her because she came up to me the other day and apologized.

I accepted her apology but told her that I didn't appreciate what she said and I hope that we can get past this. I truly am a very laid back person, and I know people vent sometimes, it's just the fact that our head nurse would say something like this, in the open, with the charge nurse from my shift.

i am a RN and i am so grateful for my CNA's. they work their butts off and go home exhausted... i'm sorry you had to hear that load of hooey from the nurses. i'm glad that one nurse stuck up for you
