Frustrated New RN looking for first job

U.S.A. New York

Hello All,

I am writing here now, because Allnurses.com has helped me out in the past and I hope you guys can give me advice once again. I am so frustrated with trying to find a job. Here's my story: I graduated with a BSN from Molloy College back in May 2009. I ended up having to take the board 3 times before I passed the third time around which was back in December 2009. So now I'm a Registered Nurse without employment. I'm the first nurse in my family and I do not know anyone in the hospitals. I have no relatives or close family friends that have ins that can help me even get an interview. I applied to many hospitals on LI and hear nothing back. I haven't had any luck with any call backs. And when I try calling the hospitals human resources they say if the nurse recruiters are interested in you they will contact you. You cannot contact them. I am beyond frustrated its been over a year now and more and more new grads are graduating. I can't find a job and I'm scared now that nobody will want to even hire me because I've been out of the loop for a year. I don't know what to do and hope anybody can give me advise to help. I've even applied multiple times to the same hospitals just for different RN positions (still no luck). I am willing to work in any area of nursing except psych or peds. Anyone have suggestions for me on how I can get a job in NY (Nassau, Suffolk, Queens, Brooklyn areas). PLEASE HELP ME! Thanks in advance for your advice and guidance its always appreciated.

Hello Smiley, Thank you for your response. You are correct about applying across the country. I did apply for a position in Arizona (although it was not a typical RN position in the hospital, instead it was as a Blood Bamk RN -blood drives) and, although they gave me a quick response, I did not pursue it. The reason is family. Although I haven't any children or a husband, I have parents and a disabled brother, that without my help they would not do well. Anyway, thank you very much for your response.:crying2:

Oh I see. Hopefully something good will come along within tri-state area.

I wish you well and I think that's wonderful to think about your family. =)

Metropolitan jewish health systems will hire new grads. Apply online and attend one of their open interview days. Dress well and be passionate about your career as a nurse. If u have any other skills or background, show them off and if u speak a second language that is a huge plus. Good luck!

Just want to say that I noticed this post in every new grad thread. And not to be negave and not to discourage you, but I know for a fact that MJHS are NOT hiring new grads at this time. I have called and spoke with 2 of the recruiters both on the phone AND in person. So, please, whoever is copying and pasting the same post, do not do so because it gives false hope to new grads. Thanks.

Good luck with job search, i hope you find something soon!

Hello,

I am glad you set the record straight pertaining to this false info. I went there to the Manhattan site I interviewed and because I am a new nurse they barely gave me the time of day. So, when I read this post afterwards I just ignored it. Perhaps I should have responded as you did. People should not be posting what they don't really know or hearsay, or what they think is because the nursing profession in this area is in dire straits and to post erroneous info such as this puts those that are naive or not informed to waste money (tolls, etc) and time pursuing something that is not so. So I am glad to have read your post, although I knew better, there are those that don't.

I give the same advice for everyone looking for a job in NY.

Relocate.

Start applying everywhere in the nation and go for the interview.

If you get the job, move.

If you're single, right away,

if you have family obligations, then discuss it with your family.

I moved in July and living it up with affordable rent and nice people. =)

I think it's awesome that you were able to move away and find such a great job! But, I think moving is an unrealistic option for a lot of young new grads who don't have the kind of money it takes to move...moving can be expensive lol! Especially if you've been studying for your boards and haven't worked...or haven't been able to find a non nursing job somewhere for the meantime. It's a great suggestion, if you have the money or if your family is willing to help, though.

hello smileymimi,

i agree with you 100 percent. you've made a realistic commentary.

I am in school taking my preq and decided to pursue my Resp Therapy certification before going into nursing.

But I just moved back from the South, GA and FL. These are both nice areas but there is a difference in work environments and in the people. Before you think about up and moving for a job just make sure you are happy with the place you are moving to, you dont want to get to a place and be unhappy and do nothing but work, work work just to survive.

Also did you try a nursing home (yea that right I said the "N" "H" word :)) many people will not pick a nursing home as there first choice it wouldnt be my first choice either but if you need to make ends meet financial it maybe a easier in right now.

Any updates? Was anyone able to gain employment? If so in NYC?
