From OB to NICU, is that a good choice???

Published

Im currently a clerk on L&D and i finish school in may. I would like to stay on L&D and work as nurse and then eventually transfer to the NICU. Is that a good move?? i'm not sure if i should go to med-surg, then to the NICU or is starting in L&D ok. Eventually, i would like to get my masters as a Neonatal Nurse practitioner. I'm just not sure on where to start.

Great question! I just started working med/surg and I wasn't sure which transition is best. L&D then NICU? I worry if I go straight into NICU and don't like it, that I'd be stuck. Its so hard to know if you'll like something without actually doing it.

If NNP is your goal, go straight to NICU. You need 2 years of Level III experience to do your NNP anyway

I agree. If your ultimate goal is NNP, then it makes the most sense to start in the NICU.

To reiterate even further... if you're in L&D and interested in NICU... don't waste your time in Med/Surg. I don't feel that what you learn there is overly useful in NICU (except maybe time management).
