Hi all.
My friend just recieved her letter today telling her she was accepted as a pre-major student, basically they invited her to take gen ed courses at the school , but she wasnt offered a spot for the nursing course. I kinda tried to talk to her, but it was a bit awkward b/c earlier, she was sooo pysched to start school and do something with herself.
How do I talk to her without upsetting her and etc?
Thanks!

By telling her to start school and do something with herself! She needs to find out why she wasn't accepted.....were her hopes too high and her grades not? Did she have the right pre-reqs to get in? Offer to look everything over and even go to the school with her to talk with someone to discover why she didn't make it this time 'round. Then, go with her to schedule the classes that WILL get her in. Her letter is a road blocker, but it's not a deal breaker. Remind her of this. Rarely do things go the way we exactly planned. She is on the right track, and she needs to stay there! Try to help her see that she IS on the correct path.
You sound like a lovely, lovely friend. :icon_hug:

Tell her to get her butt in school so she can get her pre-req's out of the way.

I am sure she is bummed.. but talk to her about the great position she will be in getting those pre reqs out of the way.. a lot of really smart, dedicated students in my program have failed a course because they had to much on their plate with taking the pre reqs and nursing core classes. I didn't realize until I got in the program that some classes would be so many days and so long.... sounds silly but taking regular classes in my school I was shocked when I realized that one of my classes was 4 days a week, 2 of those days being 7 hours + long at clinical and the other 2 being 4-6 hours.. that doesn't even include homework!!! Yeah, it is a bummer not getting in right away.. (once you decide you want to do it you want it done.. NOW) but when she gets in and sees and hears the poor guys that are taking everything at once.. she will feel a bit better. Seriously. I am so thankful I did it that way. At my school the "2 year" program is impossible unless you can LIVE at the college.. and even then very very hard.. 19 or more credits a semester.. plus really hard to schedule everything (my friend is always 28 min late to her A&P class because our nursing class overlaps it!) Tell her get in and get going, it will zoom by.
Good luck
(*sorry for the spiel.. lack of sleep..*)

I was your friend once. Just encourage her to take her courses and keep trying that is all she can do.

I know how you feel. Two of my friends didn't get in either, and I was really looking forward to the 3 of us supporting each other through the program. I actually felt a little guilty for getting in when I found out they didn't. I think you should just offer encouragement and cheer her on. Hopefully, she will get in next time around, and you can be there to offer her some helpful advice since you will be ahead of her. Maybe you can offer some suggestions to help her get in the next time.
Thanks guys for the advice. I think part of the problem was that she has a GED and the school still insisted on High School Transcripts which werent good at all. I dont know whay they needed them. But thanks..Ill try and get her through..:)

Let her determine what the subject of your conversations are going to be. I would mention once how bad I felt that she wasn't going to be starting nursing classes with me. After that, I would assume that anything you say about nursing school is only going to be a painful reminder to her. Always be considerate of her feelings about this subject when you are with her. Take you cues of what your conversations are about from her. Otherwise, too much talking about nursing school may only be a reason for her to put distance between you two.

I was in a similar situation that you are now in. All you can do is encourage her to meet the pre-reqs, and go from there. Perhaps she should check out other schools. I attend a school that seems to be fair compared to other schools in this area. They have about a 2yr waiting list, but if you attend their informational meeting and meet all the requirements that they have listed, then you are in. The requirements are possible too! You don't have to have a 4.0 just to get in. I suggest going to different area college websites and seeing their requirements. This is from my college's website, basically, if you do all this you are in. . .you may have to wait, but I think that you have to wait nearly everywhere. Other colleges may have similar requirements.
