For emergency care physicians, pulmonary surgeons, cardiologists, and nurses
This course, the third in our series on the assessment, treatment, and follow-up of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, reviews the case of a 68-year-old woman who was involved in a multi-vehicle collision, sustaining fractures of her hip and femur. She was treated with open-reduction internal fixation of both fractures. She presents with dyspnea on the sixth postoperative day.
