I have started a web forum to help Me and others quit smoking. I am a nursing student in my second year of the ADN program. I need to quit smoking so I can be a better example and educator to my patients. I am asking you to join to support me and others who wish to quit. Also, if you have any web links that would be helpful (information, tips, ect) please let me know as I am trying to expand the site with plenty of information. Please register in the forum. My quit date is July 7th - I will so desperately need the support and encouragement.

Just wanted to wish you good luck, you CAN do this! But it won't be easy as you know. I smoked for about 13 years or so and finally just quit using the patch....it really helped me. You just have to be really commited and YOU CAN DO THIS!!! You will feel sooooo much better too!!

READ THE BOOK: The Easyway to quit smoking by Allen Carr

I second the patch! I smoked for about 5 years and then finally quit with the patch. Its been 9 years now since I have quit and its the absolute BEST thing you can do.

The patch made a difference with the physical withdrawals… After that its all mental… I agree you have to be committed to quitting but you can do it and life will be great on the other side.. No more wasted money, bad breath, your sense of smell and taste will come back, and you will be able to walk up a flight of stairs without loosing your breath.

I am ready to try and quit smoking...been a smoker for 11 years now and I hate how dependent I have become. I tried the nicotine gum before but it has not worked for more than a day...I am going to try the patch this time and I'm glad to see it worked well for others. If I quit then I will try and convince my other family members to do the same..

Good luck PurplePassion and let us know how you do! You have my support and encouragement.

DH is quitting after a 30-year habit of 1-2 packs a day with Chantix. I know 3 others who've quit successfully with it.

I just heard about Chantix for the first time this week; one nurse has quit with it and another (who has been a heavy smoker x 20 years) is using it now. The second nurse told me cigarettes tasted absolutely horrible while taking the Chantix (I think you can still smoke for the first 5 days you're on the med)

My friend took Commit lozenges. This guy did dip and smoking at the SAME TIME!!! He was severely nicotine addicted. He was trying to quit smoking because his wife hated the smoke. The commit worked for him, he still dips but he doesn't do it as much as before. He has quit smoking for almost 7 months now.

I quit cold turkey myself but people quit in different ways. It wasn't that hard for me(losing weight is harder!!!) really except when I'm around people or in the bars. I hate drinking alcohol and not having something to smoke. So I stopped going to bars and have stopped drinking alcohol. Sometimes you need to take yourself away from the stressors that you know will start your cravings.

Good Luck !!! I've been smoking for about 8-9 years now and have quit a few times (once for 9 months when pregnant... i still kick myself for ever going back). I tried several times while in nursing school, but the stress got to me. Now that I have finished school, I am trying to quit. I was at a pack a day and now I smoke maybe 4 cigarettes a day. I just bought the patch yesterday and I'm going to try it again (last time I tried it, it made me extremely nauseous and I couldnt sleep at night). Good luck and if you ever want to talk to someone else who's quitting, message me :)

Have tried quitting several times w/varying degrees of success w/o luck (or maybe true commitment?). Just ran across your post and kept reading -- gives me renewed hope. I haven't heard about Chantix but plan on doing some research right now. Would like to keep in touch w/you during the process. Good luck to you.

I tried the patch a few years ago and had every negative side effect listed. I threw up frequently (didn't mean to lose weight by quitting smoking), and then one night at work my heart started racing, the world started spinning, and that set off a full-blown panic attack. So I gave up on that, and went back to smoking. I've also tried the gum - it just made me think about smoking. My NP told me about Chantix a couple of months ago, and I think I'm going to ask for a scrip when I go back to see her in July. I talked to someone yesterday who kicked a 38-year habit on it, it's been 2 months for her now. I think the key is that you have to really want to quit.
