Fort Worth Nurses!!

I'm graduting in August with my BSN and I'm moving back to FW after graduation. I have interviews with JPS, Cook's and Harris set up for this weekend.

Here's my question...what are the general opinions of those three hospitals from local nurses?? I know the hospitals are going to tell me the good stuff and the dream world stuff, so I want to know what actual nurses in the area think!

Thanks!!!!

I had clinicals during nursing school at Harris downtown and Cooks...I like Cooks way better...Harris would be so busy at times they would have patients in hallways with those curtain bars around....I even knew a nurse that was putting in a foley on a patient in the hallway that was covered by those curtain bars....how immoral!!! Also Harris is all paper charting...

JPS is where I did an externship...it was a good learning experience for the most part, till one day they were short staffed and I had 5 moms all to myself, and a fresh c-section (I was on the mother/baby floor)....I did everything except give meds...even chart the initial morning assessment (with the charge checking my computer assessment not physically there with me assessing), luckily for me I had finished my OB clinical rotation the semester before so I had some idea as to what to do. JPS is a county hospital that is a teaching facility, so you will get to see alot of things!!

Best of luck to you with your interviews!!

I worked at Harris Southwest and liked that unit. The nurses there are very nice and the unit is small but is expanding. The hospital itself is BEAUTIFUL.. they just built a gorgeous new tower. I personally really liked that L&D unit. I also worked MedSurg/ICU at that same hospital and liked it, although you can get overloaded with patients because they were a little short-staffed. As far as OB though, I delivered at Harris downtown and had an excellent experience there. And I've heard good things about working there. Postpartum there sucked though. I had really bad service, even as a nurse myself.

My best friend is a NICU nurse at cooks, along with 6 or 7 of my other friends from school. They all LOVE Cooks. It's magnet now too I believe, and they really make an effort to make their nurses happy.

Another one of my best friends works at JPS in ICU, and another friend works in L&D there and they both love it. It's a great place to learn and see alot of complex patient situations. I don't think you can go wrong with any of those hospitals.

I, too, did clinicals during nursing school at both Harris FW, Cooks and JPS.

If you want to do pedi, Cooks is the place to go. The nurses love working there. The only negative thing I've heard is that they are really strict about calling in (I think it's 3 times and you're fired).

JPS was very educational and I loved that it was a teaching hospital. Cleanliness was lacking in some parts of the hospital, though. If you want to read some negative things about JPS, go to the archives of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram from this past spring. There was a series of articles about the problems at JPS.

I accepted a job at Harris downtown and love it! Even though it's a huge hospital (as is JPS), it's very easy to get around. As for the hallway beds, the hospital says that even if patients have to have a bed in the hallway due to no room availability, they would rather be at Harris than at any other hospital in a room.

Let us know where you end up.
