fort drum area nursing situation

Published

hi.. im a RN in CA but im finding it difficut to land a job as a new grad foreign educated RN here.. my husband is deployed right now and we'l lbe moving back to fort drum later this year.. i was just wondering if anyone here has any idea regarding employment situations in the fort drum area? im planning to start the endorsement process to NY since i know it may take awhile.. coz i still need the cgfns cvs report..

thanks! :heartbeat

I live near Drum. I know Samaritan in Watertown hires new grads periodically...like about 11 since May. Unsure how the foriegn education would be considered, though. When are you coming back this way? Another class graduates in May from the local college and they will be applying starting in probably April for new grad positions.

Other area options: Lewis County has openings and will hire new grads but they are about 30-40 minutes south of here (in Lowville). Carthage Area Hospital has hired 2 new grads that I know of this year. There is also JRC (Jefferson Rehab) that has openings occassionally. River Hospital is about 30ish minutes north of here. I do not know of any new grads that applied there to know if they hire or not. There is also EJ Noble in Gouvenour. There are several other options about one hour away.

Keep an eye on craigslist because they advertise some positions and try the websites for the hospitals I listed.

It isn't the BEST job market in the US but it is a lot better than some places.

Good luck!

hi.. thanks for the information.. :) my husband is scheduled to come home oct or nov.. and by that time, a new set of new grads would be around right? i dont really know what to do.. the situation here in CA is not so good especially for new grads.. im also thinking of going to PA first, since my husband's family lives there.. and try to work in home care.. but that's another license endorsement i need to accomplish.. would experience in home care in PA help me land a job around drum when my husband comes home?

The local college in Watertown graduates once a year...in May, so there wouldn't be a current graduating class in Oct/Nov. The college in Canton might graduate twice a year but I am not sure. I don't know if home care would give you an advantage or not, but I don't see that it would hurt.

There are lots of nurses that have been there forever, but I do know they have a decent turn over rate due to military, too, so there are openings often.

I wish you luck and hope everything goes smooth for you! Be sure to bring a snow shovel!!! :p
