Foreign Doctors as nurses in Florida

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi All,

My name is Olena and I am looking for information about a nursing program in Florida that allows foreign doctors to train as RNs. I was a pediatrician in Odessa, Ukraine for six years before I married an American man and moved to the USA. I currently work at a large hospital in Jacksonville, Florida as a Patient Care Technician.

All I have been able to learn about the program at the Florida International University is over a year old.

Does anyone have more current information about it? Or, is there another facility that is offering the courses? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

There is a thread under this same section back about the end of December or beginning of January. It actually talks all about the program. I believe that they just had their first class of graduates.

Goof luck to you....

FIU has the program; I believe Florida Atlantic is also starting up a similar program; also, you may want to consider the PA program at Miami Dade Community College in Miami

As an update on this thread, a close friend of mine teaches at FIU this very program, and there is a lot of resentment on the part of the md's 'cause they think they have had all this instruction, and than some. I'm sure it would not be a problem, if nurses were allowed meaningfull credit for their education, and reduce the time needed to become an MD. You have to be carefull what you wish for, and who you erect barriers for.
