For Those Who've Started BSN Gen. Ed. Courses....

What courses have you enjoyed, and which would you recommend for someone considering starting on gen. ed. classes? Since there's a possibility I may not get into clinicals until Feb, I'm trying to devise a back up plan. The RN-BSN progam I'm looking into says after you have all the required courses (ie. A&P, micro, chem), just fill in the rest with any electives. The only requirement is that 10 credits of electives be social sciences, natural sciences, or humanities and that won't be hard since I have interests in those areas anyway. What classes do you all recommend? :)

I have a minor in sociology from my BS degree, and one of the classes I really enjoyed was Medical Sociology. The only prerequisite was Sociology 101, the intro soc course. We talked about the sick role and the disease state, and epidemiology and studied a lot of it through the AIDS crisis (this was 1992, back before the wonders of protease inhibitors, when HIV was a short-term death sentence); I still remember the professor and learned SO MUCH from the class that I still remember today. From there I fell in love with the epidemiology of infectious disease and differential diagnoses....I was elated when, all these years later, "House" came on TV!

I also took a sociology class called Symbolic Interactionism (again, only needed the basic sociology class). It talked about how people create their own perceptions and how we ourselves are responsible for the "symbols" we use to create our own concept of our worlds. It was another class I really enjoyed.

Have you looked at doing a Minor degree? With 10 credits needed you'd be more than 1/2 way there in most Minor programs.

I am looking at pursuing a minor in either Anthropology or Criminology. I am interested in Forensic Nursing and want to strengthen my undergrad courses for when I go for a Master's degree.

If you have a specfic area you think you might want to go into, look at a minor degree. For example, Minor degree in Psychology for a Psych Nurse?

I want to eventually be a nurse-midwife. I have actually considered a minor, but don't know what would help my future field.

I have had intro soc, and a sociology of medicine does sound interesting. I might see if the school I'd do gen ed's has a class like that. :)

How about Psychology? Pscyhology would fit very nicely with any part of Nursing.

Business minor? That might be useful if you ever wanted to open your own practice or birthing center.

Those both have their benefits....I don't know, I've been mulling around the idea of a Biology minor, mainly because with A&P 1&2 and Micro out of the way you wouldn't think I'd have many more courses to take at all to get a minor..
