I dont know if this has been posted yet....

As a nurse im sure you are presented with people from all races and cultural backgrounds, and sometimes language barriers exist.

I am fluent in both english and spanish but i would definitely like to pick up another language. so i wanted some feedback in choosing a third language.

Got any ideas? thanks

I was leaning towards a language from asian countries of maybe tagalog.

I ask socal nurses because that is were i plan to work...

Los Angeles and surrounding areas are like a mosaic of areas of one dominant language. In my area, there is Korean and Armenian-- no Spanish. 20 miles southwest Chinese and Vietnamese. Fairfax district-- Hebrew. Etcetera.

Sometimes the city will actually name an area based on it's dominant ethnic group, but since it's a slow process, things can change. I get such a laugh out of "Historic Filipinotown". Every bleeping sign is in Russian. Oops. :lol2:

I am totally envious that you have Spanish down! it seems like every job description that i see has spanish as a requirement! I agree with everyone else, Tagalog would be helpful, the only other one i can suggest is Chinese, but it depends on the area. I know Diamond Bar Chinese would help a lot.

In San Antonio, Arabic, which I am dying to learn, or Swahili, are great languages to know. I had a Rwandan speaker recently and we had to get a translator phone, and then it turned out that the translator didn't speak the same dialect as the patient. What a mess!

Yea... I agree. Arabic language is a PLUS! If the nursing thing doesn't work out -- then you can always go work for the FBI or CIA. They want people who can speak Arabic. The thing is, the language itself is harder to learn and the writing, compared to other languages. Still, it's kinda cool to carry a gun and have a license to shoot people! (This is why I like CSI and cop shows lol) and having a title ---> "Agent" right next to your name is just as cool, eh? lol.

Whats up with this!! Is there some kind of a connection???

Although I can't speak for vegas2009 I think she is very likely saying that it has been in the news pretty frequently that the government had a shortage of Arabic translators and interpreters. We know that many people work for the FBI or CIA who aren't out there carrying a gun -- it's sort of a stereotype but not meant to be insulting.
