For the "bad test takers" I passed the second time

Published

I believe that I have to be one of the worst test takers ever. I get down to those two questions and usually pick the wrong one! I passed the second time at 215 questions. Last time I got 158 and did not pass. I think that the only thing that really help me being a bad test taker is practice practice practice!!!! I did the kaplan and looked up a few things in my nclex book like infection control, a few disease's, and labs. I am not going to tell you I did 200 questions a night because I just cannot sit there that long to do that. I did 50-100 questions a night, and looked at some of the things I was unsure about. But really honestly it was just doing questions and learning how to take the nclex type questions. You can know the information inside and out but if you don't know how to take tests it is going to be that much harder. Practice makes perfect. And another thing that helped was going in there with a positive attitude. If I can do it anyone can I promise!!! Good luck to everyone and THANK YOU ALL from the bottom of my heart. You guys are amazing and will make great nurses.;)

To all of those that FAILED the NCLEX, please do not give up. Here is what I did to pass the boards:

1. Trust God

2. Take Kaplan & concentrate on the Qbank

3. Make flash cards when you read the rationales on things you did not understand.

4. Take practice test EVERYDAY at least 100-150 questions.:typing

5. Believe in yourself

Praise Jesus in everything you do. He carried me through my boards with 75 questions. It all feels like a dream. I am forever grateful to my Lord & Savior Jesus Christ. I AM FINALLY A RN !!!!!!!!!! I PASSED MY BOARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :yeah: :wink2:

Thank you to everyone on this website for so many encouraging words.

Congrats on passing!! I have to retake the test, too, and it's so comforting to read success stories from others who have retaken it :)

You can do it and you WILL pass your boards next time. Practice questions everyday and you will confirm the knowledge you already have in you. How soon do you re-test?

To lovenursebeing; I did some of the saunders to freshen up of a few disease's, infection control but I did mostly kaplan. The questions on saunders are easier. kaplan was closer to the Nclex than anything I did. I would get 80% on the test in Saunders and high 50's to mid 60's on the question trainer for kaplan so.... If you do all of the 7 test from kaplan and some qbank (I did 13 qbank at 25 questions a piece) than you should be prepared. I didn't do the 7 test from kaplan the first time. Good luck to you!!!:)

Congrats!! I am so happy for you :)

I did not pass my first time and I am taking it for the second and hopefully last time next Thursday.

This time around I am using Kaplan. I am taking QT6 today and then QT7 on Monday.

I haven't been able to complete too much of the qbank and I am worried that may hurt me. How many of the q-bank questions would you say you did? Or what percentage of them?

Thanks so much and congrats again!!!

I took all the Qbank questions several times just to give myself extra confidence. If you can, would go straight to the qbank at this point. read over the rationales. You can do it and you WILL !!! I will say a prayer for you today. Let me know if I can help in anyway :)

Shakira2001,

Thank you so much! Yes, I only have 4 more days to study since I plan on resting the day before.

I still have 800 qbank ques to do so do you think it would be more beneficial to focus on practicing with those then just going nuts looking up tons of facts?

My qbank scores fluctuate so I get frustrated. One time I get a 70 and then I get a score in the 40's. :-/ I do feel more prepared then I did last time and I am determined to stay confident. :)

Thanks for the encouragement!!!!

Yes, Definitely go to the qbank. I would stop memorizing facts. I would strictly focus on Qbank questions and reading rationales. I know it gets frustrating, but you are almost there. Also, MEMORIZE all lab values and write them down as soon as you walk in to take your test. This will help with anxiety. Also, KNOW about infection control. Also, try to understand stable vs unstable patients when assessing.

Honestly, keep practicing tests everyday. Let me know if i can help you some more.
