I hope to be starting Nursing school in the fall '08. Having never attended college before (I was a hairstylist previously so just attended vocational school) I am told it will take me about 3.5 years to complete school to get a nursing degree. I was wondering if someone could clue me in on what to expect. How long before I begin actually learning what I will need for nursing? At what point do I start clinicals? What will some of my clinicals be? I would appreciate any insight I can get.
Thanks all!
I would definetily check out South College. I was going to go there, then researched their passing rates for the Nursing exam and they are way low-- like 67 %, also they kept calling me for a while to get registered and I thought that was odd, like they were almost pushy to get my signed up. They also promised that there is no wait to start clinical (competition) however there must be now, I talked to a girl that finished her pre-reqs there and couldnt get into the clinical portion so she is applying with Roane. Anyway- just a word of caution:no:

Well coming from someone who is currently in NS, I will tell you how long its taken me.
It took me two years to finish pre-reqs... At my school, it "should" only take 1 year, but you would have to be crazy in my opinion to be able to do it in one year. (this includes microbio, anatomy, physio, gen bio, gen chem, organic chem, communications, statistics, psych and... i think thats it?)
My program is 3 years.. 6 semesters (mind you this is a BSN program)... I will be able to finish it in 2.5 years because they are offering summer school for my semester (long story about why)...
We started clinicals the very first semester, half way through... The first three semesters are all med/surg. Then starting 4th will be OB/peds. 5th semester is community health/psych and 6th- critical care/management.
So at the end of all this, it will take me 4.5 years in all.. I started learning "real nursing stuff" after 2 years.
Good luck!!! :redbeathe

I will graduate next May. I'm in my 3rd semester now, which finishes up in just over a week.
Just keep in mind that each school is a little bit different in the way they do acceptance, clinicals, etc. At my school, to be accepted into the program, they took all of your prereq classes and you got 'points' for them. If you made an A (4points) and it was 3 credit hours, they would multiply 4 x 3 =12 points for that class. They would do that for all the classes. Then we had to take the TEAS test, which is a general knowledge test on math, English, reading, and science and you would get points for that. If you finished in the 90th percentile, you would get 90 points. They would then add up all your points and they accepted the top 72 students. The better grades you had, the better chance you had to get accepted right after qualifying.
