FNPs in specialty areas

Hi all,

I am an FNP student writing a paper on policy concerning FNPs working in specialty areas. I just need to identify a major problem, outline several policy alternatives for resolution of the issue, and recommend an optimal solution. I am not finding much in the way of actual policies concerning this, it seems that there is little consensus as to scope of practice, training, qualifications / certifications etc. I am focusing on FNPs in EDs just to make it more manageable, but any input is welcome regarding local / state / nationwide policy that you may know of regarding this issue. Thanks in advance!!

Just as a heads up, people on this site often get testy about posts like this because it suggests you're asking us to do your homework for you (without demonstrating that you've done any research on your own).

I've read numerous times on this site that there's some movement to prevent FNPs from working in any hospital setting, including ED; I think it's called the Consensus Model, although I don't know what it is. If you use the AllNurses search bar to look up "FNP in ED" or "FNP Concensus Model" you'll probably find a buch of forums that reference the policy and governing body.

Moved to student NP forum.

Yes, the Consensus Model should be something you are familar with in your program. It is a movement that is gaining strength that FNPs, ACNPs, etc will practice only in the area in which they have been trained ie FNP - primary care, AGACNP - acute care of adults, PACNP - acute care of peds pts, etc..

So - that is probably going to be your number one issue. Are you familiar with this?

Thank for your reply! I apologize if I gave the impression I was wanting others to do my work for me, that was not my intent at all, I just needed a little guidance or input for narrowing my searches down. Thanks for letting me know about the Consensus Model... I have been looking into that and it's helpful info!

Sorry, forgot to add that I wasn't previously familiar with the consensus model as we hadn't addressed that in this course yet... most of the focus was on opioid prescribing and independent NP practice. I chose FNPs in specialty areas as the topic for my final paper, I appreciate the input!
