FNP Boards to License

I am currently a FNP student set to graduate this August 2021. I am looking to get licensed in PA or NJ and I am wondering from test date (hopefully August or Sept) to practicing, how much time am I looking at? I have heard some horror stories of the process of taking months and I want to mentally prepare myself for what timeline from graduation to license is realistic.

Months is realistic.

  • Register to test, wait for final degree conferred and paperwork from school
  • Take the test
  • Wait for scores to be sent to board
  • Wait for your board to license you as an RN if you don't have that already (you can do that now to save time in PA and NJ)
  • Apply for APRN License
  • Apply to/accept job
  • Send in collaborative agreement if required in state
  • Apply for DEA license
  • Wait for credentialing to be completed by job with insurance companies.

It's always months there's no shortcut for a provider, lots of stuff to do.

Get both PA AND NJ because NJ is slow beyond imagination, as in slower than other boards. Currently, the NJ BON has a staffing crisis plus the fact we're in a pandemic. They have only one staff member handling APN licensure applications last I checked. At least you could look for work in both states if getting a job is time sensitive for you.
