Probably the easiest way to remember hypo/hypervolemia is to think it through. What are you going to see if a person is dehydrated? What are you going to see/hear if the person is fluid excess? You really just need to understand fundamentally the manifestations of each.
I totally agree, memorizing did nothing for me. Understanding why is so much better for you in the end. Just think about having too little, or not enough fluid*blood in the vascular system. ... good luck :)
