Well I am a bit worried about privacy, so this has to be vague.
Young pt. Had confirmed H1N1 2 weeks ago.
Came to our ED combative and confused.
vitals okay.
many security officers and leathers.
Iv sedatives and haldol given.
tests done and ruled out some medical issues.
sent to floor. still sedated.
pt has no significant prior medical or psych issues.
pt is highly educated for his young age.
concerned family at bedside.
what is going on?
I just have this nagging feeling that his current condition has to do with the flu.
anyone seen anything like this? mental status changes a couple weeks out?
of course I am home now and do not know what is going on with pt at the moment.

Infection of brain and nervous system with a variety of resulting diseases is a know consequence of H1N1. The conditions can follow shortly after the infection or they can have onset much later than the actual initial infection. Having a doctor that specializes in infectious diseases can be a great help. Many of the conditions occur as result of inflammation, the initial disease has already gone.
spinal fluid was clear.
thanks for your input oramar.
will continue to follow his case.
