Florida Schools with High Acceptance Rates?

there are quite a few great CC's in south florida, and alot of them dont have a waiting list but use a "points" system if your GPA is good. IRCC in ft pierce is one and PBCC in lake worth is another. good luck!

Hi Everyone! I currently live in California but really would love to live in Florida for a short while b/c I have family there and the beaches are lovely!
I currently hold a Bachelor's Degree but did not receive a cumulative GPA (I went to a hippy school, GPA was frowned upon). I'm taking my pre-reqs now and doing great (should have a 3.5 or so).
Are there any schools in FL that are relatively "easy" to get into? I'd like to pursue an accelerated BSN, however not having a Bachelor's GPA I'm afraid will hinder me.
Can anyone suggest any private schools or community colleges with short wait lists that may be slightly easier to get into? I'd prefer South Florida, but am open to all suggestions.

University of Miami is a great school, and everyone with the minimum requirements will get accepted.

I would of gone there, but I missed the deadline when I wanted to apply. They have lots of scholarship options (including one that works with a local hospital that pays for EVERYTHING, you get your BSN and a contract for 2 years to work for their hospital!!)

you would love that option, its open for all kinds of students.

another great school is Nova south eastern university. Great school. www.nova.edu

UM is very easy to get into. you just have to meet minimum requirements and you are in!

Nova is hard, because you have to go thru interview, essay, background check before they accept you.

the university of miami is a good school but the entrance requirements are not easy and it is not cheap and there is not one single hospital in south florida that will pay for you to go to um even if you do sign a 2 year agreement. baptist will pay for you to go to florida international university, since they are a state school and they have a branch of miami dade college right on baptist hospital campus down here on kendall drive. um has had some problems with cheating and they were put on probation by the florida state board of nursing for one year,last year, for low passing scores and the issues of cheating and various other tremors within the program.

i graduated from um but in 2004. right after i left, the school got a new dean and many of the wonderful, old staff could not stay so they either went to barry university and are teaching there at the nursing school or chose to pursue other areas of interest.

um has a program where you can finish in about 12-14 months if you have a bachelors degree in something else and your grades are above average but i would not recommend it. that much data cannot be absorbed that quickly and truly become a part of you. but, then again, maybe you can. at any rate, the alternative is personal loans of about 50k for 2 years and that figure has gone up too.

there are no short cuts. my father always told me that and only now do i realize, he was right.:nuke:

i cannot speak to ft.pierce and palm beach county but bcc(broward community college) and mdc(miamidade college) both have long waiting lists and high expectations. perhaps, looking a little further north may suite your hippie state of mind. though i do not know about martin county(the keys). i hope i have been helpful.

Yes! Everyone thank you so much for your help. Right now my primary focus is on Miami Dade, Miami U and also Barry U. Miami U is looking to be the most promising at the moment, I do believe it will be easier to get into than Miami Dade...Barry is off the charts expensive so I don't know about that. Thank you all for offering insight into this nursing school mess!

i was recently accepted to barry university as a second degree student with a ugpa of ~3.1 and would therefore say that with a 3.5 you should have no problems getting accepted. the pre-reqs are pretty standard like any other second degree program, with the exception of biochemistry, which i was not expecting. the school offers several options for those who have previously earned a bs/ba, including an accelerated track. also, according the paperwork i received, the tuition at barry is around $24,000 while univ. of miami's website indicates tuition is approximately $35,000 (not including room/board, books, supplies, transportation, etc.). with my gpa i was offered a scholarship of $11,500 that can be renewed. with a gpa of 3.5 i would definitely suggest that you look into barry, because you may qualify for the same, if not more. don't worry about the money until you have the acceptance letters and financial aid packages in your hands!

what you mention is true, it did happen, but since then they have improved a whole lot!

they have implemented the hesi exam for every semester so the students must pass the test in order to move on to the following semester, just like miami dade has the ati exam.

the nclex-rn exam scores have gone up

and they have added a scholarship program, just like the one miami dade college has with baptist on campus program, um has a similar program with jackson memorial hospital, where all the classes are on campus at the hospital, and they even wear different uniforms than the on campus um students.

there are tons of people that go thru um that have had tons of scholarship options, the higher your gpa the more scholarships you will get, but if you have a 2.5 gpa there is not a lot of room for scholarships and you will have to relay on just loans.

i know tons of my co-workers who attended um and they love it, and are wonderful nurses.

look up their school www.miami.edu ; everyone gets accepted who meets the minimum requirements. no waiting list, the staff is the most helpful there, unlike miami dade, fiu or any other public school.

if i could go back in time, i would of just applied there instead of wasting my time applying to miamidade and getting rejected 5 times.

update: bcc took out their waiting list. you have to apply within the dates of the application period, then they will accept you based on a point system. no more waiting lists!!!!

I am going through the same thing right now. I have a very low undergraduate gpa. I have a bachelor's in biology and i have enough classes to have two minors one in psych and one in chem. But my gpa sucks. Also the only classes i haven't taken pretty much are human psy and anatomy. I am not sure what to do. Does anyone know of any schools that you let you in if you take pre-reqs at their school and do well? preferably in the south east. Thank You.

try community colleges!!! a lot of them the min. requirement to get in is 2.0-2.5 and some have waiting lists... so put your name on the waiting list

NOVA Southeastern University personally interviews each applicant, so you might be able to explain the GPA. Also, they have the best A&P experience around since they are a med school too.
